Wish upon a star – and discover a new hobby in the process – with these twinkling events at the Exmoor Dark Skies Festival

-

Remember gazing up at the night sky as a child and dreaming of swinging on a star, or meeting the man in the moon? Now you can rediscover that same wonder with a packed programme of twinkle-tastic events in Exmoor National Park, which boasts some of the darkest skies in Europe. From October 19-29, Exmoor Dark Skies Festival welcomes both novice star-lovers and experienced astronomers to appreciate what goes on above our heads at night. One of the highlights is bound to be the possibility of a meteor shower over the summit of Dunkery Beacon while rutting deer gather and bellow into the darkness! Or for a true eyeful of stars, join in one of the many stargazing walks that takes you to the very best vantage point for a dazzling evening’s star show. Walkers should don their hiking boots and join a Dusk Safari, which treks through beautiful Exmoor woodland as the sun sets with many opportunities to spot wildlife and hear all about local legends. Brave souls might fancy a dip at Bossington Beach for a night swim with glow sticks, where you can lie back and float, watching an incredible panorama of stars. And once you’re well and truly bitten by the stargazing bug, there’s a host of expert talks explaining everything from how to use a telescope to how to photograph the best star views. It’s not just a grownup’s game; little ones can enjoy an astro-inspired arts and crafts table, storytelling and ‘Dark Walks’ with hot chocolate and marshmallows. The whole thing rounds off with the Kipscombe Harvest Festival and Stargazing Supper, with a feast of local food before an evening by the campfire and a stargazing trail. Exmoor National Park.
