If you go down to the woods of Hodsock Priory in Blyth, Nottingham, you’re sure of a gorgeous surprise. Miles and miles of woodland floor gleam white as the snowdrop season begins in earnest. In the grounds of the historic country house, a special woodland walk opens from February 10, inviting you to lace up your walking boots and wander through 12 acres planted with four million snowdrops. These much-loved blooms come in many different heights, sizes, shapes and even colours and are always a welcome assurance that winter is nearing its end. They raise their heads from January to March and love a shady spot, especially under the canopy of woodland trees. Simply to wander through the snowy glades is a treat for all the family but for something extra special, pay a visit to Hodsock from February 16 to 18 when the acclaimed Whispering Wood Folk group takes over the winter woodland for a special performance in tribute to these first heralds of spring. In an innovative promenade show, the group will perform The Snowdrop Queen, sharing their magical tale as they wind their way through the beech trees and snowdrops of Horsepasture House. Then as the sun starts to set and darkness falls, a stunning fire and light performance takes over, showcasing the snowdrop scenery in a brilliantly original way. When the winter chill sets in, head inside to the heated marquee tea room to grab a cup of something warming and a tasty slice of cake. Alternatively, find a warm spot by the campfire of the Woodland Café where the manager and ninth generation member of the Buchanan family to own Hodsock Priory gives a daily history talk about the secrets of his ancestors’ estate.
