Background TV music

-

Thank you to everyone who wrote or emailed on the subject of unnecessary background music on TV documentaries following a letter on the issue. Sadly we only had room to print a few of your thoughts… How I agree with Mrs McCabe about unnecessary background music on TV documentaries. If we are watching someone climbing a mountain or any activity indoors or outdoors, why do we need music? If we were actually going up a mountain or out fishing on the high seas we wouldn’t have an orchestra with us! J Hankin, North Wales I can’t enjoy documentaries when someone is trying to murder a piano in the background so I switch off. Mrs Hay-Parker, South Yorkshire When watching nature programmes, it would be nice to hear birdsong, etc, instead of intrusive music. Out walking in the countryside we want to hear birds singing and the noise of cows and sheep. We wouldn’t expect to hear music and we don’t need it. Sue Buckey, by email Not only, in my opinion, are the voices drowned by the music, but the music cannot be enjoyed because of the commentary. It’s clearly apparent that the music serves no useful purpose, being played at such a high level. Colin Ashton, by email Watching Julie Walters’ programme on coastal train journeys in Britain, I could barely hear what she was saying. Does anyone ever listen to these programmes before they go on air? Perhaps they just don’t care... Cheryl Mason, by email
