MY LESSONS life FROM

Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon chats to Yours about relationships, learning new things and why she loves her latest venture

-

Family are the most important thing

Relationships with family and friends are what really matters. My favourite thing to do is just hang-out with my daughter, Azura (4), my partner, my mum, my nan and my brother. I’m often busy with Britain’s Got Talent on a Sunday but when I’m not, there’s nothing I like better than having the family over on a Sunday, cooking and eating and just having a lovely lazy time with the people I love.

Variety really is the spice of life

I feel so lucky that being a judge on Britain’s Got Talent - which I love more and more with each series – allows me to pursue other passions, such as my music, clothing line and now, writing books. I always see myself as a bit of a juggler when it comes to work but I like being involved in lots of different projects.

Have compassion

My motto is treat others as you’d like to be treated. I try to have compassion for people and be open-minded and understanding. I try not to be too quick to judge – unless you’ve walked in someone’s shoes, you don’t know how they feel or what they’ve been through. I’ve learned to be patient, kind and give people a break! Life can be hard.

Life is for learning

I believe part of our journey on this earth is to learn – to become better versions of ourselves. We’re all students of this planet, we’re all constantly learning and nobody has the answers because nobody’s perfect.

My new book adventure

I think it’s so important to give youngsters the gift of positivity. Aurora Beam, the heroine of my new children’s book Lightning Girl is a very positive character and one that hopefully all girls – and boys – will relate to. She’s a normal 11-year-old but just so happens to have super powers! But every character in the book contributes and plays a part.

The overriding message is that teamwork is important, that every child has something special to offer in their own right and that we should encourage each other to bring out our very best qualities.

I love reading

Reading a good book can transport you to a different place. I’ve always loved reading and books equal comfort to me. In some ways, it reminds me of my childhood – my mum reading to me, reading with the teachers at school and also the feeling of excitement I’d get when I had a new book to dive into. Writing a book myself has been equally joyous – I’ve really got the bug now and can’t wait to get started on book two to see what Aurora gets up to next!
