BEFORE YOU BEGIN…

Ch – chain; dc – double crochet; MC – main colour; rep – repeat; RS – right side of work; ss – slip stitch; st(s) – stitch(es); tr – treble; WS – wrong side of work

SQUARES

(Make 63, 7 of each colour heart)

Using MC, make 22ch.

Row 1 (RS): 1dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. (21 dc)

Row 2: 1ch (does not count as a st), 1dc in each dc to end.

Rows 3-4: Rep Row 2.

Cont in dc throughout, following chart for Rows 5-16 to work the heart motif, and using one small ball of MC on each side of motif.

Read the chart from bottom up, working odd-number rows from right to left and even-number rows from left to right.

Using MC only, work 5 more rows in dc. Fasten off.

MAKING UP AND FINISHING

Lay the squares out on a flat surface in strips of 7 squares across by 9 squares down, so different colour hearts are arranged evenly across the blanket. Using MC and with WS together, join the rows into strips using a double crochet seam, then join the strips together vertically.

FOR THE EDGING

Round 1: Join MC in top right-hand corner of blanket, make 1dc in same corner, *1dc in each st along edge to next corner, 2dc in corner sts; rep from * twice more, 1dc in each st along edge to last corner, 1dc in corner st, ss in first dc.

Round 2: 1ch, 1dc in each st along edge to next corner, 2dc in corner sts; rep from * twice more, 1dc in each st along edge to next corner, ss in first 1-ch. Round 3: 3ch, 1tr in each st along edge to next corner, 2tr in corner sts; rep from * twice more, 1tr in each st along edge to next corner, ending 1tr in same space as first 3-ch, ss in top of first 3-ch. Fasten off. Sew in ends on WS. Press the blanket to size.
