FINDING FAIRIES

Children, young and old will love exploring the Fairy Glen, a delightful wooded ravine with cascading waterfalls and tales of fairies, goblins and dwarves! Wander along wooden bridges and woodland trails and depending on the time of year, you’ll be greeted with an array of flora and fauna including carpets of wild garlic and bluebells. Route

Start/parking: Small layby on High Moor Lane, east of High Moor restaurant

Start

Walk W down lane past restaurant going L before village down Broadhey Lane. Follow lane curving R and continuing along track at lane end. Follow track curving L at Bowling Green House. Descend track passing through gate (stile). Continue to cross stile (gate) going R of second stile to walk down enclosed path (fence each side). Go L over stile before trees, continuing down R of field (trees R). Descend path (gully develops R) crossing stile in R field corner. Carry on downhill through woods to cross brook climbing up other side reaching A5209 by bus stop.

2. 1 mile/1.8km

Cross road going L rising to go R over stile heading down R of field (trackless). Cross stile in bottom R field corner to lane. Go R and immediatel­y L descending to go over railway level crossing via two gates. Continue over canal bridge going L afterwards picking up

Leeds/Liverpool Canal towpath. Head east along towpath leaving canal at bridge 40 (bench). Go L over bridge.

2 ¼ miles/3.5km

Continue into woods on track curving R then L to cross bridge. Continue through opening (kissing-gate) to track crossroads. Go R walking to house entrance. Go through kissing-gate continuing to follow yellow arrow through kissing-gate, taking enclosed path exiting into woods via kissing-gate. Descend, rising up to three gates, crossing stile R taking rising track. Cross stile to field. Follow R edge of field (trackless/wood R) rising up and down to cross stile following arrow (ahead) past stone post heading over field towards wood. Cross stile descending steps into woods curving L crossing two bridges. Rise up steps to path junction (squeezesti­le R) at entrance of Fairy Glen.

2¾ miles/4.6km

Go L up glen (brook L) climbing steps to cross bridge. Continue on other side of brook climbing steps. Continue ahead climbing past waterfall, reaching bench at path crossroads. Go straight over (little bridge) continuing through woods. Follow narrowing glen crossing brook. Rise up, dropping to rise to squeeze-stile passing through to track. Go R to A5209.

3¼ miles/5.4km

Cross carefully going R to layby. Go L halfway down layby crossing stile to follow track up R of field. At track crossroads go L continuing over stile to cut R. Follow rising path crossing two bridges curving R (fence L). Follow brook, R, crossing two stiles over track. Eventually fork R (junction) following path to avoid muddy section. Curve R over dip heading over field passing L of pond (under telegraph wires). Follow path past second pond, R, rising, finally picking up lane and outbound route. Go R and R again back to car.
