Apple template

Small and Large mitt template Fusible webbing

5 different fabrics and felts for the apple Fading fabric marker

2 pieces of mitt fabric measuring 23x21.5cm (9x8½in)

Fabric glue (optional)

Sewing machine with embroidery foot Sewing threads to tone with fabrics and felts

2 pieces of main fabric and 1 piece of heat-proof wadding measuring 84x23cm (33x9in)

Approx 2.5m (2½ yds) bias binding

1 Enlarge the apple template by 400 per cent. Draw the main apple shape twice onto the fusible webbing and cut around about 1cm (½in) outside the lines. Iron the webbing onto the apple fabric, then cut out two apple shapes. Cut out the rest of the apple pieces twice from felts.

2 Enlarge the small mitt template by 400 per cent and cut two from the mitt pieces of fabric. Position a brown stalk on a mitt piece and iron an apple shape to the centre of the mitt, overlapping the end of the stalk. Layer the other felt pieces on top – the red half, the white core, and the brown seeds. Add the leaves. Pin or glue the pieces in place. Repeat with the second small mitt piece. 3 Using free-machine embroidery, sew around all the elements of the apple design with co-ordinating threads.

4 Cut two lengths of bias binding to fit across the straight edge of the small mitt pieces; cut them a bit longer and trim later. Press the bias binding in half lengthwise and slip the straight edge of each mitt piece into the fold. Pin binding in place. With the feed dogs up, set the sewing machine to a medium- straight stitch and sew binding to the mitt, removing pins as you go. 5 Enlarge the large mitt piece by 400 per cent. Fold the large pieces of fabric and the wadding inhalf, lay the straight edge of the template on the fold and cut out whole mitt pieces. Now lay one long mitt piece right-side down, with the wadding on top and the other long mitt on top of that, right side up. Lay the small mitts right side up at each end and pin everything in place. Tack the layers for extra security.

6 Press the rest of the bias binding in half and cut off a 6in (15cm) length. Machine-sew the open edges of this piece and set it aside; it will be the hanging loop. Pin the rest of the bias binding all around the outside edges of the oven mitts, taking extra care around the curves. Fold the ends under and make sure they meet neatly. Position the hanging loop in the centre of one edge, tucking the cut ends under the bias binding. With a straight or decorative stitch, sew around the bias binding, removing pins as you go and making sure you sew over the ends of the hanging loop.
