Make a storage basket
Knit these handy storage baskets for keeping all your bits and pieces tidy
YOU WILL NEED
1 x ball Debbie Bliss Roma super-bulky (super-chunky) yarn in shade 008
Citrus (yellow)
Small amounts of dark grey and orange light worsted (DK) yarns
A very small amount of off-white light worsted (DK) yarn
2 x ½in (12mm) pale blue buttons
Black sewing thread
A very small amount of fibrefill toy stuffing
UK 000 (10mm) and UK 7 (4.5mm) knitting needles
Yarn sewing needle
Large-eyed embroidery needle
Standard sewing needle
TENSION
10 sts and 13 rows in stocking stitch to a 10cm (4in) square on UK 000 (10mm) needles.
MEASUREMENTS
The finished basket stands 16.5cm (6½in) tall
BEFORE YOU BEGIN….
k-knit; k2tog-knit 2 stitches together; p-purl; psso-pass slipped stitch over; p2tog-purl 2 stitches together; remremaining; sl-slip; ssk-slip slip knit; st(s) -stitch(es); st-st-stocking stitch.
MAKE THE BASKET
Using UK 000 (10mm) needles, cast on 34 sts. Beg with a k row, work 4 rows in st st. Row 5: [K1, p1] to end.
Row 6: [P1, k1] to end.
Rep rows 5-6, 12 times more.
Row 31: [K2tog] to end. (17 sts)
Row 32: Knit.
Row 33: K1, [k2tog] to end. (9 sts)
Row 34: Knit.
Break yarn and thread through rem sts.
MAKE THE WINGS (MAKE 2)
Using UK 000 (10mm) needles, cast on 5 sts.
Row 1: [K1, p1] to last st, k1. Rep row 1, 5 times more.
Row 7: P2tog, k1, p2tog. (3 sts)
Row 8: P1, k1, p1.
Row 9: Sl1, k2tog, psso. (1 st)
Fasten off.
MAKE THE EYE BASES (MAKE 2)
Using dark grey yarn double and UK 7 (4.5mm) needles, cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: [K2tog] to end. (10 sts)
Row 2: [P2tog] to end. (5 sts)
Break yarn, leaving a long strand. Thread a yarn sewing needle with this strand of yarn, then take it through rem sts and slip them off the needle.
Pull the yarn tight to close up the sts. Put the two short edges right sides together and oversew them together.
MAKE THE BEAK
Using orange yarn double and UK 7 (4.5mm) needles, cast on 8 sts.
Beg with a k row, work 2 rows in st st.
Row 3: K1, ssk, k2, k2tog, k1. (6 sts)
Row 4: P2tog, p2, p2tog. (4 sts) Break yarn and thread through rem sts and secure.
ADD THE EYES
Oversew the eye bases in position. Using off-white yarn and straight stitch, work 8-point stars on the eye bases of the larger basket and 6-point stars on the eye bases of the smaller basket, using the photograph as a guide.
ADD THE BEAK
Sew the long seam of the beak, leaving the lower edge open. Push a tiny amount of stuffing into the beak to make it stand out and oversew the beak in place. Weave in all loose ends.
ADD THE BUTTONS
Sew the buttons in place using black thread.
