Feel-good festive spices Cinnamon

The smells and tastes of Christmas evoke so many memories but they can also give our health a boost, writes Lorna White

Health benefits: Studies have found this traditiona­l festive spice helps boost brain power and improves memory and our ability to react quickly when necessary. Cinnamon is also thought to have a beneficial effect on blood pressure, insulin levels and glucose levels making it ideal for those living with Type 2 diabetes.

Use it in... your morning porridge – simply mix in a spoonful. It can also be added to your favourite curry recipe for a Christmass­y twist.

Cloves

Health benefits:

Traditiona­lly used in Chinese medicine, cloves are revered for their antibacter­ial properties and are great for our oral health, simply chew after a meal to remove bad breath and aid digestion. They’re also rich in liver-friendly natural antioxidan­ts. Use it in... any curry or chutney. They also make a delicious herbal tea – just simmer some whole cloves in boiling water for 5-10 mins. At this time of year, you could also pop them into your mulled wine recipe.

Nutmeg

Health benefits: Native to Indonesia, nutmeg has a warm and nutty flavour. Containing anti-inflammato­ry plant compounds that act as antioxidan­ts, studies have suggested nutmeg may help to improve mood and heart health.

Use it sweet treats such as custard, crème brûlée, rice pudding and eggnog. For the best flavour, use fresh nutmeg. You'll first need to crack the shell open by smashing it, then peel the shell away from the nutmeg. Use a grater and hold it at a 45° angle, then slide the nutmeg along it.

Cardamon

Cardamom has been used in traditiona­l medicine for centuries for its health benefits associated with lower blood pressure, improved breathing, weight loss and reduced anxiety.

Use it in... curry and herbal tea, or add it to your favourite bake by sprinkling it into the batter. Simply grind down the cardamom seeds to powder with a pestle and mortar.

Health benefits: When buying liquorice, steer away from the shiny black sweet version – buy it in its woody root form or as a ground powder. Liquorice is good for the digestive system, helping to relieve indigestio­n and heartburn. It can also calm the nervous system and help balance energy levels.

Use it in... teas, syrups and sauces. Powdered liquorice can also be stirred into cake batters or added to meat. Its anise flavour works best with game meats such as duck or pigeon; add a pinch of ground liquorice to your meat rub or seasoning.
