BRIGHT AND BREEZY

-

These cheery woven raffia cards are so simple to make that a whole collection can be made in an afternoon, with gift tags and envelopes to match!

Skill: Beginner Time: 15 minutes

MATERIALS

Thin, brightly coloured card Thin corrugated cardboard coloured raffia

Rotary hole punch

Pencil and scrap paper Scissors

Craft knife, cutting mat, metal ruler Embroidery needle Fast-drying, high-tack craft glue

1 Using the heart template and the star template, cut out one of each using scrap paper. Lay the corrugated cardboard textured side down and draw around the templates. Cut out the shapes with scissors.

2 In pencil, mark the position for the holes using the template. Using the smallest hole punch setting, make a hole at each mark.

3 Take a strand of raffia and thread it through the needle. Stitch the raffia through the holes on the cardboard shapes, securing the ends with a dab of glue on the back. 4 Cut out a rectangle of coloured card measuring 28x12.75cm (11x5½in). Score along the halfway mark and fold in half. Glue the woven corrugated shapes firmly onto the front of the card, holding in place until well adhered.

Finish off your card with a fun tassel on the envelope...

1 To make a tassel, cut a piece of cardboard about 7cm (2¾in) wide (the length doesn’t matter). Wind a double length of raffia around the card and thread a piece measuring about 15.25cm (6in) in length underneath the raffia. 2 Tie the short length of raffia at what will be the top of the tassel with a tight knot. Cut along the bottom of the raffia and remove from the cardboard. Tie another length of raffia 15mm (½in) from the top of the tassel, securing with a knot. Trim ends neatly.
