Traditional island charm

-

The Isle of Wight is one of the bestloved British holiday destinations, combining natural beauty with an old-fashioned way of English life. But if you fancy a taste of the Continent with the familiarity of home, you can’t go wrong with a holiday on Jersey. And at just nine miles by five miles in size, this Channel Island is perfect to explore on foot at a leisurely pace. Follow the clearly signposted green lanes to ramble well-trodden routes through quiet treelined routes, rugged beach trails and spectacular clifftop paths in your own time.

With more than 43 miles of coastline around the island, you’re never more than ten minutes from the sea. You’ll find rocky coves in the north and sweeping sandy beaches in the south best for building castles and splashing about in the water.

Savvy locals follow the sun around the island, starting their day in the east at beaches such as sandy Grouville or pebbly Archirondel and ending the day with spectacular sunsets in the west along the five-mile stretch of St Ouen’s Bay – a hotspot for surfers.

Much like the Isle of Wight, Jersey has its fair share of dramatic views. Walk the causeway to La Corbière Lighthouse – the world’s first-ever concrete lighthouse – which not only guides seafarers through storms but is an amazing spot to see the sun go down.

One of the most iconic sights on the Jersey horizon is La Mont Orgueil Castle, which protected the island against French invasion for more than 600 years. There’s a network of tiny staircases and hidden rooms to explore and you can see over to France from

the top on a clear day.
