Make the centre

1 Cut across the grain of the yellow crêpe paper to create a strip 1in (2.5cm) tall. Stretch slightly and cut into lengths 6in (15cm) long. Use a burgundy marker to draw a fine line along one long edge, then draw a series of short lines about ¼in (6mm) long at right angles to the long edge. Turn the strip over and use a black marker to draw a fine line along the long edge. Cut fine fringes all the way along, one-third of the way down from the edge.

2 With the burgundy fringed edge facing up, cut the lower edge diagonally across to reduce bulk. Apply glue to the wider end of the strip and stick to the stem wire. Once dry, dot glue along the rest of the strip and roll up around the wire.

3 Secure with a piece of floral tape wrapped around the base of the fringed centre. Using your fingers, gently spread the fringes out.

Make the petals

4 Cut across the grain of the burgundy crêpe paper to create a strip ¾in (19mm) tall. Stretch slightly and cut eight petals using Template A. Gently smooth using your thumbnail along the grain. To create a 3D effect, use a burgundy marker to colour the bottom third of the petal, and along the very top edge. Use your finger or a piece of foam to gently apply red pastel two-thirds of the way up from the petal base. Repeat with the remaining seven petals. Curl the top edge of the petal with your chosen curling tool. Apply glue to the bottom third of the petal, then pinch and twist to give the petal a concave shape and a narrow petal base. Repeat with the remaining seven petals.

5 Dot the petal bases with glue and attach each pinched/twisted base to the fringed centre, ensuring that the petal bases sit evenly below the fringe. Secure with floral tape, wrapping tape just past the stamen base.

To finish

6 Cut a piece of green crêpe paper 1in (2.5cm) tall grain-wise and ¾in (19mm) wide. Cut eight long triangle sepals using Template CA. Curl the sepals slightly if you wish. Apply glue to the base and wrap them around the bottom of the petals.

7 Finish by wrapping the stem wire from the sepals to the end by using a narrow strip of florist’s tape, in green or white. You can achieve a natural effect by taping the wires of two flowers together. If you use white floral tape, cover with green and burgundy spray paint. Open up the petals and bend the stems to give the flower character.
