The Isle of Wight Walking Festival

Although some of our favourite events have been cancelled this year, we can still celebrate them and get excited for next year. This fortnight, it’s the Isle of Wight Walking Festival!

-

Due to run: May 2-17 (there may still be a chance to enjoy this wonderful walking event this autumn).

What is it? This two-week event is one of the UK’s biggest walking festivals, offering hundreds of scenic walks across the island, varying from gentle ambles to themed rambles and more adventurous treks.

When did it start? The Isle of Wight Walking Festival was first set up by the Isle of Wight Council in 1999. It offered 39 walks and more than 5,000 walkers took part. In 2016, the Council made the decision that it could no longer afford to run the festival due to funding so Visit Isle of Wight – the Island’s Destination Management Organisation – stepped in to keep the festival going, albeit with fewer resources. Today, the event has been restored to its former glory.

What’s in store? Get up close and personal with the best of the Isle of Wight’s stunning scenery – from the beautiful chalky cliffs of the west coast to the lush green rolling hills of the east. You’ll get to discover unique routes with experienced local walkers and enjoy an extensive programme that includes walks across, over and around the Island. In just one day, you can see the best highlights of the English countryside – from sand dunes and pebbled coves, to thatched-roof villages and bustling sailing towns.

How can I go?

The festival is due to return in May 2021. But if you can’t wait until then, it’s hoped the 2020 event will be rescheduled for Oct 24-Nov 6 (subject to Government and Public Health England guidelines). An autumn visit on this isle will treat you to a kaleidoscope of colour, opportunities to spot migrating wildlife and atmospheric misty landscapes of red and gold woodland, purple heather and russet red bracken.

■ Walks are free, but you must register online and reserve your place on your preferred route(s). Walkers need to be reasonably agile and mobile. Not suitable for those with impaired mobility
