This child’s sweater looks impressive, but is deceptivel­y simple to make and could suit a little girl or boy

BACK

Using 4mm needles, MS and thumb method cast on 53[59:65:71] sts.

Now work in patt as follows: 1st row (rs): Knit.

2nd row: Purl.

Last 2 rows form st-st. Work in st-st for a further 4 rows, ending with a ws row. 7th row: K6 [9:2:5], MB, *k9, MB, rep from * to last 6[9:2:5] sts, k6[9:2:5].

Starting with a p row, work in st-st for 9 rows, ending with a ws row.

17th row: K1[4:7:10], MB, *k9, MB, rep from * to last 1[4:7:10] sts, k1[4:7:10].

Starting with a p row, work in st-st for 3 rows, ending with a ws row.

Last 20 rows form patt. Cont in patt for a further 12[12:22:32] rows, ending with a ws row.

Break off M and join in CS.** Cont straight until back measures 18[22:25:31]cm, 7[8¾:9¾:12]in, ending with a ws row.

Divide for back opening

Next row: Patt 26[29:32:35] sts and turn, leaving rem 27[30:33:36] sts on a holder. Work on this set of 26[29:32:35] sts only for first side of back opening as follows:

Cont straight until Back measures 24[28:32:38]cm, 9½[11:12½:15]in, ending with a ws row.

Shape shoulder

Keeping patt correct, cast off 8[9:10:11] sts at beg of next and foll alt row.

Work 1 row, ending with a ws row.

Break yarn and leave rem 10[11:12:13] sts on another holder (for neckband). Return to sts left on first holder, slip centre st onto a safety pin (for back opening border), rejoin yarn with rs facing and patt to end.

Work on this set of 26[29:32:35] sts only for first side of back opening as follows:

Cont straight until back measures 24[28:32:38]cm, 9½[11:12½:15]in, ending with a ws row.

Shape shoulder

Work 1 row.

Keeping patt correct, cast off 8[9:10:11] sts at beg of next and foll alt row, ending with a ws row.

Break yarn and leave rem 10[11:12:13] sts on another holder (for neckband).

FRONT

Work as given for back to **. Cont straight until 16[18:22:22] rows less have been worked than on back to start of shoulder shaping, ending with a ws row.

Shape front neck

Next row: Patt 23[26:29:31] sts and turn, leaving rem 30[33:36:40] sts on a holder.

Work on this set of 23[26:29:31] sts only for first side of neck as follows: Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at neck edge of next 4 rows, then on foll 2[3:3:3] alt rows, then on 1[1:2:2] foll 4th rows. 16[18:20:22] sts. Work 3 rows, ending with a ws row. Shape shoulder Cast off 8[9:10:11] sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row. Cast off rem 8[9:10:11] sts. Return to sts left on holder and slip centre 7[7:7:9] sts onto another holder (for neckband). Rejoin yarn with rs facing and patt to end. 23[26:29:31] sts. Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at neck edge of next m4 rows, then on foll 2[3:3:3] alt rows, then on 1[1:2:2] foll 4th rows. 16[18:20:22] sts. Work 4 rows, ending with a rs row. Shape shoulder Cast off 8[9:10:11] sts at beg of next row. Work 1 row. Cast off rem 8[9:10:11] sts.

SLEEVES (BOTH ALIKE)

Using 3. mm needles, MS and thumb method cast on 31[31:33:35] sts. 1st row (rs): K1, *p1, k1, rep from * to end. 2nd row: As 1st row. These 2 rows form moss st. Work in moss st for a further 4 rows, ending with a ws row. Change to 4 mm needles and now work in patt as follows: Starting with a k row, work in stst for 6 rows, inc 1 st at each end of 3rd of these rows and ending with a ws row. 33[33:35:37] sts. 7th row: Inc in first st, k5[5:6:7], MB, *k9, MB, rep from * to last 6[6:7:8] sts, k5[5:6:7], inc in last st. 35[35:37:39] sts. Starting with a p row, work in st-st for 9 rows, inc 1 st at each end of 4th and foll 4th row and ending with a ws row. 39[39:41:43] sts. 17th row: K4[4:5:6], MB, *k9, MB, rep from * to last 4[4:5:6] sts, k4[4:5:6]. Starting with a p row, work in st-st for 3 rows, inc 1 st at each end of 2nd of these rows and ending with a ws row. 41[41:43:45] sts. Last 20 rows form patt and start sleeve shaping. Cont in patt, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 3rd and 0[2:3:0] foll 4th rows, then on 1[0:1:4] foll 6th rows, taking inc sts into patt. 45[47:53:55] sts. Work 3[1:1:5] rows, ending with a ws row. Break off MS and join in CS. 2nd and 4th sizes only Inc 1 st at each end of [3rd:next] row. [49:57] sts. All sizes Cont straight until Sleeve measures 15[17:20:24] cm, 6[6½:8:9½] in, ending

with a ws row. Shape top

Keeping patt correct, cast off 5[5:6:6] sts at beg of next 4 rows, and 5[6:6:7] sts at beg of foll 2 rows.

Cast off rem 15[17:17:19] sts.

BACK OPENING BORDER

With rs facing, using 3. mm needles and CS, starting and ending at sts left on back holders, pick up and knit 13[13:15:15] sts down first side of opening, k st left on safety pin at base of opening, then pick up and knit 13[13:15:15] sts up other side of opening. 27[27:31:31] sts. Cast off knitways (on ws).

NECKBAND

Join both shoulder seams. With rs facing, using 3. mm needles and CS, starting and ending at top of back opening, pick up and knit 1 st from top of back opening border, then k across 10[11:12:13] sts on left back holder, pick up and knit 11[13:16:16] sts down left side of front neck, k across 7[7:7:9] sts on front holder, pick up and

knit 11[13:16:16] sts up right side of front neck, k across 10[11:12:13] sts on right back holder, then pick up and knit 1 st from top of back opening border. 51[57:65:69] sts.

1st row: Knit.

Rep last row once more.

Cast off knitways (on ws).

TO MAKE UP

Mark points along side seam edges of back and front 11[12:13:14]cm, 4¼[4¾:5¼:5½] in, either side of shoulder seams (to denote base of armhole openings).

Fold sleeves in half lengthways and placing folds to shoulder seams, sew shaped cast-off edge of sleeves to back and front between marked points. Join side and sleeve seams. Fasten back opening by making a button loop at one end of neckband and attaching a button.

Pin out sweater to the measuremen­ts given. Cover with clean, damp tea towels and leave to dry. See ball band for further washing and care instructio­ns.
