Small furries

■ If you have guinea pigs or rabbits, your garden should ideally have a clear area of grass for them to graze on. According to the Animal Welfare Act, runs should be at least 8x4x4ft for rabbits and 4x4x4ft for guinea pigs (based on two animals sharing).

■ Position the run in the shade and never in direct sunlight – guinea pigs especially are prone to heatstroke. You may need to reposition the run as the sun moves over the garden or place a blanket on top to create shade.

■ Rabbits and guinea pigs are prey animals by nature and feel more relaxed when they have somewhere to take cover. Ensure they have access to shelter they can run into if they become spooked by something. This could be a simple cardboard box turned upside down, or something sturdier like this Zippi shelter (below) from www.omlet. co.uk (£13.49). Wood Green says: “Stuff plastic plant pots with hay and fresh forage for added interest.”
