Get a free Wills & LPA guide

-

he Yours Guide to Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney is designed to help you get your affairs in order. It explains the types of LPA and their features and why you need them, and also the importance of having a Will and what happens if you don’t make one.

TWhat do LPAs do?

LPAs allow you to appoint a person or people you trust to make important decisions on your behalf should you ever be unable or unwilling to do so. There are two types: a Property & Financial Affairs LPA and a Health & Welfare LPA. Setting them up means decisions about your future health or money are in safe hands and gives you total reassurance – no one has the legal right to make decisions on your behalf without one. Without LPAs, your loved ones will have to go through the Court of Protection, so it makes sense to arrange them.

Why do I need a Will?

A Will is a legal document that allows you to clearly state what should happen to your assets when you die. It’s the only way you can determine how your assets and precious possessions are distributed after

Source: The Co-operative your death. Without one, your estate will be distributed in accordance with the laws of intestacy. These laws follow strict rules, so loved ones may not inherit anything at all.

QSometimes I can’t get to the Post Office to get cash for the lady who picks up my shopping. Without giving her a credit card, is there another way to give her money?

Paulette, Plymouth Yours says As easy as it might seem to give her your card, you should never give out your credit card or PIN. Most major supermarkets have launched Volunteer Shopping cards, which you can buy and top-up online. Print it out or to stay contactless, you can email it to your volunteer.

QI’d like to change my name – how easy is it to do?

Mrs RC, by email Yours says Companies can help you do this, but it is very simple to do it yourself. You can change your name at any time by making your own Deed Poll, with no legal process required. But to apply for – or to change – official documents such as your passport or driving licence, you might need an ‘enrolled deed poll’. To put your new name on public record you will need to enrol it at the Royal Courts of Justice which costs £36. ■ Download documents from www.gov.uk/ change-name-deed-poll

TRIED & TESTED

QI have a leak in my garden hose. Can it be repaired or do I need a new one?

Jessica, by email Yours says There’s a couple of ways to go about it. Either cut out the split area and replace with a hose repair connector (£4.49), or this self-amalgamating rubber tape from Diall

(£2.49) could do the job.
