Perfect Paphos

This Cyprus favourite has the lot – dreamy beaches, stunning views and a little bit of history

WHY GO?

With 326 days of sunshine a year, pretty villages, gorgeous beaches, and plenty to do and see, it’s no wonder so many people choose to visit Cyprus each year.

The ancient city of Paphos, with direct flights from the UK, is one of your best options, whether you’re after great food, sightseeing or simply some sunshine and sand. Said to be the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, its charming old town and Unique UNESCO World Heritage Centre gives you a touch of traditional Cypriot and Mediterranean culture. But much of the island is within easy reach for exploring, so this is a great base for whatever you want to do.

See the sights

The main harbour area is jam-packed with restaurants, popular bars, and a huge dash of history.

The archaeological site close by has mosaics at the House of Dionysus and an amazing agora (gathering place) and mini amphitheatre. Paphos Castle and the lighthouse are well worth a look too.

The Old Town is a gorgeous collection of small streets, packed with quaint shops offering local produce and souvenirs. Elsewhere, take a trip to the village of Omodos. Nestled in the Troodos Mountains, it provides a taste of a more traditional Cypriot way of life away from the hustle and bustle, and it’s also home to the Monastery of the Holy Cross, the island’s oldest religious site. For lunch, check out the Stou Kyr Yiann local taverna, which offers a huge variety of traditional meats, salads, and local wines at reasonable prices.

Relax on the beach

There’s an abundance of gorgeous beaches in Paphos, with Coral Bay’s golden sands one of the most popular spots. Its calm, shallow waters are ideal for families

and there are restaurants and bars nearby. Faros beach is a slice of sandy heaven with stunning views and warm waters. It’s in a great location, near the Medieval castle, harbour and Tomb of the Kings.

And don’t miss Lara Bay, a hotspot for sun worshippers and relaxation. Plus, it’s a turtle conservation site. While you must not disturb nests, you can visit the conservation station and see the hatchlings.

Where to stay

Adults-only five-star Asimina Suites Hotel has a range of options for your budget, from B&B to full board, and has its own private beach, three restaurants and a gorgeous outdoor pool. Every evening there is live music in the restaurants, and you can take a complimentary gin-tasting class or learn how to make a cocktail, should you fancy it.

The hotel is a short cab ride or 30-minute walk from the centre of Paphos. It also has tennis courts, a gym, spa and yoga classes. It’s the perfect option for a romantic getaway, or a base to explore the island.
