UFCW Local 880 members OK contract with Fresh Mark

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 880 announced on Friday that its members voted to ratify a new contract with Fresh Mark, a supplier of meat products, including Sugardale and Superior’s Brand Meats.

This ratificati­on marks a significan­t milestone in the relationsh­ip between UFCW Local 880 and the Massillon-based Fresh Mark, which has grown from a regional provider in Northeast Ohio to a national presence in the meat industry, according to the union’s announceme­nt about the contract.

Local 880 said the contract underscore­s a mutual commitment to the welfare and advancemen­t of workers in the packing and processing industry.

Sonja Campbell, director of meat packing and food processing at UFCW Local 880, expressed her satisfacti­on with the agreement.

“This contract is a testament to the strength and unity of our members at Fresh Mark,” she said in a press release. “It ensures not only fair wages and benefits but also a safe and respectful work environmen­t. We’re proud to continue our partnershi­p with Fresh Mark, a company that understand­s the value of its workforce.”

Miles Anderson, president of UFCW Local 880, also highlighte­d the broader impact of the agreement.

“This contract is a victory for our members and sets a positive example for the industry,” he said in a prepared statement. “It demonstrat­es what can be achieved when workers have a strong voice.”

UFCW Local 880 represents over 20,000 members in grocery, retail, packing, processing and health care in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvan­ia.

Deputies set up perimeter in Green, arrest wanted Columbus man

Summit County Sheriff’s deputies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol set up a perimeter around a wooded area in Green Friday morning and arrested a suspect wanted by the Whitehall Police Department outside Columbus.

Whitehall police asked the Summit County Sheriff ’s Office around 8:45 a.m. for help locating 27-year-old Lorenzo Bridges, who was wanted on a warrant for second-degree felony charge of strangulat­ion, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies, along with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, attempted to make contact with Bridges at a residence in Green but did not find him.

A witness saw a man matching Bridges’ descriptio­n run into the woods near state Route 619 and Pickle Road in Green, and deputies and troopers set up a perimeter.

The release said Bridges was seen running on Forest Lake Drive and was taken into custody by deputies at approximat­ely 10:30 a.m. He was taken to the Summit County Jail.
