John Joseph Roberts

KENT - John Joseph Roberts, 76, of Kent, left this earth on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. He was in the arms of his two sons and surrounded by his family. He was born in Akron on November 27, 1947 to the late Joseph and Dorothy Roberts. John was a graduate of Stow High School and went on to earn a master’s degree in sociology from Kent State University.

He proudly served in the United States Navy, receiving his honorable discharge in 1969. After earning his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Kent State he was a lecturer in the sociology department at Kent State then became a City Planner in Ravenna, Ohio. He also worked for many years in the aerospace industry for Goodyear Aerospace and Loral Corporatio­n where he was part of the F16 flight simulator program. Most of all John loved being a father and raising his two boys. He was a member of the VFW and was an avid historian. He enjoyed traveling all over the world, he spent time in Asia, Europe, and Mexico. As well as much recent time spent in Florida, which he considered a second home. He enjoyed skiing and spent many weekends in Ellicottvi­lle, NY. Not a day went by that he didn’t enjoy music, playing both the guitar and the trombone in his younger years but always listening to his favorites as he got older and could no longer play. In his later years, John’s primary focus was his family. His sons were the absolute loves of his life and he supported them in every way imaginable.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his aunt Jean Mills. He leaves his sons, Chris Roberts and Phillip (Antoinett) Roberts; brothers, Tim and Jeff Roberts, his niece Taylor Roberts, as well as his beloved furry grandchild­ren, Bismarck and Alina.

In honoring his wishes, John will be cremated, a memorial service will be held on SATURDAY, February 3, 2024 at 2:00PM at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home, 628 W. Main St. Kent, OH 44240. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:00PM-2:00PM on SATURDAY at the funeral home. A private graveside service with military honors will be held for the family at a later date.
