Bedford woman identified in Monday fatal car crash on Ghent Road

The 28-year-old woman who died in a single-car crash Monday morning on Ghent Road has been identified as Donita Smith, of Bedford, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Smith was driving southbound in her Chevrolet Equinox around 6:25 a.m. when she lost control of the vehicle around a curve and smashed into a concrete sign. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Before Smith was identified, the Beacon Journal was previously told by the Akron Police Department that the crash victim was from Akron, which was incorrect.

The cause of the crash is under investigat­ion.

Summit County Sheriff’s Office rescues abandoned bag of kittens

A bag of kittens was found dumped in the Firestone Park Community Center parking lot Saturday afternoon, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

A person who saw someone abandon the kittens alerted Sheriff Kandy Fatheree and others from the Sheriff’s Office who were all attending a Senior Expo at the community center. The sheriff ’s team eventually retrieved the kittens, who were reportedly very young and not fully weaned yet.

The agency contacted RubberCity Rescue and the kittens were taken back to their shelter.
