Jones nabs first Cup win passing Truex on last lap
Indy 500 winner Power grabs pole at Iowa Speedway
Erik Jones won a crashfilled NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, passing defending series champion Martin Truex Jr. on the final lap and then crossing the finish line for the first victory of his Cup Series career.
Jones was involved in one of the many wrecks, but his No. 20 Toyota was still in good enough shape to get by Truex.
Truex finished second, followed by AJ Allmendinger, Kasey Kahne and Chris Buescher. It was another odd top 10 at Daytona. Ty Dillon was sixth, followed by Matt Dibenedetto and Daytona 500 champion Austin Dillon.
Last year’s race winner, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., had the most memorable run. He started two early accidents that wrecked more than half the field and was part of two more cautions late.
Chevrolet extended its winless streak to 18 races, its longest since a 31-race drought in 1981-82. Indycar: Indianapolis 500 winner Will Power will start from the front row for Sunday’s Indycar race at Iowa Speedway after winning the pole. Power was the fastest during Saturday’s qualifying with a two-lap average of 182.391 MPH, giving Team Penske its fourth straight pole at Iowa. Power will start first for the 52nd time in his career. But none of the previous 11 pole sitters at Iowa have gone on to win the race. Josef Newgarden, whose up-and-down season is back on an upswing after a dominant win at Road America two weeks ago, will start alongside Power. Ryan Hunter-reay was third, followed by Simon Pagenaud.
formula one: Lewis Hamilton prevailed in a tight battle with Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel to snatch pole position for the British Grand Prix. It’s the fourth consecutive pole position for Hamilton at Silverstone, his sixth overall on the track, and his 50th for Mercedes. Vettel, who leads Hamilton by one point going into the 10th of 21 races, was faster than Hamilton until the British driver went again to finish 0.044 ahead. Vettel’s Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished third, ahead of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, while Austrian GP winner Max Verstappen was fifth and his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo sixth.
