Epic doubles win keeps U.S. alive in Davis Cup

ZADAR, Croatia — Mike Bryan teamed with Ryan Harrison for the first time and helped the Americans outlast Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic 7-5, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) over nearly five hours to cut Croatia’s lead to 2-1 in their Davis Cup semifinal on Saturday.

The winner of the semifinal will meet defending champ France in the Nov. 2325 final. France beat Spain 3-0 in the other semi.

More tennis: American qualifier Amanda Anisimova is in her first WTA final at age 17 after upsetting top-seeded Zhang Shuai 7-6 (4), 7-5 at the Japan Women’s Open. Anisimova will face hsieh Su-wei in Sunday’s final.

Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he’s coming out of retirement again to fight Manny Pacquiao for a second time in December. Whether the fight actually happens remains to be seen. There are no promotiona­l barriers between the two men, because Mayweather promotes himself and Pacquiao is a boxing free agent. Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in May 2015.

Cycling: Simon yates is poised to win his first Grand Tour title after he successful­ly defended his lead of the Spanish Vuelta through the 20th stage. Yates will take his advantage of 1 minute, 46 seconds, over enric Mas into the final stage, when race custom dictates the riders don’t attack the race leaders on the traditiona­l arrival to Madrid. Mas moved into second with the stage victory.

College football: Tennessee distribute­d 1,067 free tickets to its game with UTEP to Hurricane Florence evacuees from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

NHL: Brad Marchand and Jake Debrusk scored in the shootout to lead the Boston Bruins to a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames in the exhibition season opener in Shenzhen, China . ... Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is taking a leave of absence to be with his family following the death of his father, George. NFL: Cleveland says it is going to release troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon on Monday. Gordon has been suspended for most of the past four seasons because of drug violations.
