U.S. wins opener at women’s World Cup

TENERIFE, Spain — Elena Delle Donne scored 19 points and Nneka Ogwumike added 16 to help the U.S. beat Senegal 87-67 on Saturday night in the Americans’ opener at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

The win was the Americans’ 17th in a row in the event and 42nd in the past 43 games in the World Cup.

The U.S. plays China on Sunday.

Boxing: Anthony Joshua stopped Alexander Povetkin in the seventh round to retain his IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweigh­t belts at Wembley Stadium in London. Joshua, who fought with a suspected broken nose from the second round, sent Povetkin to the canvas with a big right midway through the seventh and was unloading a flurry of punches before the referee stepped in to end the fight. Joshua’s record is 22-0, with 21 wins inside the distance. Autos: ryan Newman will drive full-time for Roush-fenway Racing in the No. 6 Ford next season in NASCAR’S Cup series. Newman has driven the No. 31 for Richard Childress Racing since 2014, but announced earlier this year he would leave the team at the end of the season.

College basketball: UNC Wilmington will open its preseason men’s and women’s practices at North Carolina due to lingering effects of Hurricane Florence. UNC Wilmington’s campus has been closed since the storm hit.

tennis: Naomi osaka eased into the final of the Pan Pacific Open with a comfortabl­e 6-2, 6-3 semifinal win over Camila Giorgi. Osaka will face fourthseed­ed Karolina Pliskova in Sunday’s final . ... Ajla tomljanovi­c ended hsieh Su-wei’s eight-match winning streak with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win at the Korea Open. In Sunday’s final, Tomljanovi­c will play second-seeded Kiki Bertens ....
