Nationals pitchers blank Mets

Starter, four relief pitchers combine on one-hitter vs. N.Y.

Rookie Austin Voth and four relievers combined on a one-hitter and the Washington Nationals defeated the New York Mets 6-0 on Saturday, hours after they were officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Matt Wieters and Trea Turner homered for Washington.

Voth (1-1), making his second major league start, allowed only an infield single to Michael Conforto leading off the fourth inning. Voth struck out five with two walks in five innings.

Braves 5, Phillies 3: Atlanta capped a most surprising season by clinching its first NL East crown since 2013, with Mike Foltynewic­z taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. A year after going 70-92, manager Brian Snitker and his Braves surged back into the playoffs. A loud crowd at Suntrust Park joined the celebratio­n as star Freddie Freeman, rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. and the rest of the Braves reveled.

cardinals 5, giants 4 (10): Tyler O’neill hit a solo home run with two outs in the 10th inning and St. Louis held its playoff position, rallying past San Francisco. Yadier Molina also homered for St. Louis, which began the day 11⁄2 games ahead of Colorado for the second NL wild-card spot. Blue jays 5, rays 2: Rookie left-hander Thomas Pannone pitched 62⁄3 innings to win his third straight start, Rowdy Tellez homered and drove in three and Toronto beat Tampa Bay, dealing another blow to the Rays’ faint playoff hopes. Tommy Pham and Jesus Sucre hit solo home runs for the Rays, who began the day 61⁄2 games behind Oakland in the race for the second AL wild card.

tigers 5, royals 4: Mikie Mahtook hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Detroit beat Kansas City in Victor Martinez’s final major league game. Pirates 3, Brewers 0: Milwaukee’s offense was stymied when Trevor Williams combined with three relievers on a five-hitter, slowing the Brewers’ playoff push. Seeking to reach the postseason for the first time since 2011, the Brewers had their wild-card lead cut to two games over St. Louis and fell 21⁄2 games behind the Cubs in the NL Central with seven games left.

cubs 8, White sox 3: Javier Baez homered and the Chicago Cubs took advantage of a huge mistake by Ryan Lamarre, beating the crosstown White Sox to increase their lead in the NL Central. Ben Zobrist added two hits and two RBIS as the Cubs moved 21⁄2 games ahead of secondplac­e Milwaukee. Coupled with the Brewers’ 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh, the Cubs lowered their magic number for clinching their third straight division title to six.

Marlins 5, reds 1: Austin Dean homered and drove in three runs, and five Miami pitchers combined on a six-hitter.

astros 10, angels 5: Justin Verlander struck out 11 in six dominant innings and Jose Altuve capped a nine-run eighth with a two-run homer.

Mariners 13, rangers 0: Robinson Cano broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the fifth inning and Marco Gonzales allowed one hit over six innings.

rockies 5, d’backs 1: Antonio Senzatela allowed three hits in seven strong innings and Colorado kept pace in their playoff push. The Rockies entered the game 11⁄2 games behind the firstplace Dodgers in the NL West and 11⁄2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card spot.
