Lowe, Meadows lead Rays past Sox

Boston eliminated from AL East race with its latest defeat

Brandon Lowe and Austin Meadows homered and the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the last-place Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Saturday night.

Lowe hit a solo shot, his 12th of the season, off Marcus Walden (0-2) in the seventh for a 5-4 lead.

Tyler Glasnow (3-1) allowed four runs and six hits over seven innings for the Rays, who are a combined 15-4 against the Boston and the New York Yankees.

Diego Castillo worked the ninth to get his fourth save.

Boston, which was eliminated from the AL East title race, got homers from Michael Chavis and Christian Arroyo. The Red Sox stole six bases with Glasnow pitching.

The Red Sox are 2-17 against the Rays, Yankees and Atlanta, and are 14-14 against everyone else.

Arroyo tied it at 4 on his two-run drive in the seventh off Glasnow. The Rays starter had a finger on his pitching hand looked at during the fifth.

Meadows hit a leadoff homer off Nathan Eovaldi in the first.

Eovaldi, who had been out since Aug. 21 due to a right calf strain, gave up one run, three hits and struck out four in three innings. Cubs 4, Brewers 2: Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer off Josh Hader in the ninth inning, and Chicago topped Milwaukee. NL Central-leading Chicago had gone scoreless for 17 straight innings before breaking through against Hader, who hadn’t allowed a homer all season long.

White Sox 14, Tigers 0: Jose Abreu hit a pair of threerun home runs and matched a career high with seven RBIS, and Chicago beat Detroit for its eighth straight win against the Tigers. Abreu went 4-for-4 a day after his career-best 22-game hitting streak ended.

It was the longest streak in the majors this season. Tim Anderson also had four hits, and Eloy Jimenez added three for the AL Central-leading White Sox, who have won seven of eight.

Twins 8, Indians 4: Byron Buxton homered for the second straight night, Rich Hill got his first win since July and Minnesota beat Cleveland.

Astros 7, Dodgers 5: Alex Bregman singled in the goahead run during a five-run ninth inning, and the Astros rallied past Los Angeles under smoky skies.

Cardinals 7, Reds 1: Dakota Hudson allowed just one hit in six innings and St. Louis backed him with four home runs. Harrison Bader hit a three-run homer and Matt Carpenter and Paul Goldschmid­t added solo drives in the sixth as the Cardinals broke it open.

Rangers 5-1, Athletics

2-10: Rougned Odor and Ronald Guzman homered in a fiverun first inning for Texas, who beat Oakland in the first game of a doublehead­er. Marcus Semien drove in four runs, Chris Bassitt struck out eight over six innings and the A’s beat Texas to get a split.

Royals 7, Pirates 4: Adalberto Mondesi homered and stole a base for the third consecutiv­e game, Kyle Zimmer got his first career win and Kansas City beat Pittsburgh.

Phillies 12, Marlins 6: Bryce Harper homered, doubled and reached base five times, leading Philadelph­ia over Miami. Mariners 7, D’backs 3: Ty France and Jose Marmolejos hit homers, Justus Sheffield pitched seven quality innings and Seattle snapped a threegame losing streak.

Notes: Twins reliever Sergio Romo was suspended for one game by Major League Baseball on Saturday for jawing with Indians star Francisco Lindor. Romo and Lindor also were fined for the incident, which occurred during Minnesota’s 3-1 victory Friday night. Romo worked a perfect eighth, retiring Lindor on an inning-ending flyout. Romo and Lindor exchanged words as the shortstop ran toward first, and then the two walked toward each other before they were separated by teammates . ... Oakland All-star third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a strained right hip. Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, two days before he is scheduled to undergo surgery in Vail, Colo.
