Food donation

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members from the Albany area delivered almost 31,000 pounds of non-perishable foods Friday to six Albany Capital area pantries from Greenwich to Cobleskill. An additional 5,000 pounds of food had been delivered to The Regional Food Bank of Northeast New York last week. A total of over 1.6 million pounds of food will continue to be distribute­d this month and in October to 200 pantries across the state. The donation commemorat­es the beginnings of the church in 1820 in upstate New York 200 years ago.

Maria College students

Employees from New York State Industries for the Disabled held a food drive Friday to help students at Maria College who are struggling with food insecurity. Based on self-reported data, 22 percent of Maria students are eligible for SNAP benefits, according to a statement from NYSID.

Justice efforts

U.S. Rep. Paul D. Tonko announced that $862,250 will be awarded to local government­s and public safety nonprofits in the Capital Region through the Department of Justice: $619,648 for the John Finn Institute for Public Safety, $109,876 for the state Division of Criminal Justice Services to support delinquenc­y prevention efforts and juvenile justice system improvemen­ts, $63,358 to Albany to prevent and control crime through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program, $24,737 to

Troy to prevent and control crime through the Byrne program and $44,631 to Schenectad­y County to prevent and control crime through the Byrne program.

■ saratoga Hospital The 2020 Saratoga Hospital Golf Invitation­al presented by A.O.W. Associates, Inc. raised $157,552 for the hospital’s Nursing Scholarshi­p Program. Mary Solomons, executive director of Saratoga Hospital Foundation, said, “In a year of challenges and change, the tournament exceeded what was raised in 2019. The hard work of our volunteer committee and the generous support of this community provided funding for 53 nursing scholarshi­p awards this year.”

Dunkin’ last week announced the results of its recent Iced Coffee Day campaign with a donation of approximat­ely $30,000 to the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.

unity House

Bob Talham, Inc., a Troybased paving, constructi­on and excavation company, recently donated $20,000 and a car to Unity House’s “Making Child Care Affordable Initiative” as part of the Major Gifts Campaign for the Working Poor.

■ epilepsy Foundation Derrick Rumenapp laced up his sneakers for a 26-mile journey, in honor of the one in 26 people who live with epilepsy in the U.S. (his son, Matt, is one of them), raising $12,965. This money combined with funds raised by 42 other teams resulted in more than $60,000 being raised in the annual Walk to End Epilepsy.

■ trail developmen­t At noon Wednesday, at the North Chatham Trolley Station, Route 32 & Depot Road, the Columbia Friends of the Electric Trail will accept a check for a grant of $10,000 for its capacity building efforts to maintain the soon-to-open AlbanyHuds­on Electric Trail in Columbia County. Funds will be used to assess organizati­onal needs, conduct an organizati­onal strategic plan, and other capacitybu­ilding initiative­s. Funding was awarded from the Park and Trail Partnershi­p Grant program. Carpooling to the event is encouraged.

■ Food pantry drive Ballston Spa National Bank and the Regional Food Bank of Northeaste­rn New York and town if Milton hosts a contactles­s drive-thru food pantry at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Milton Town Hall, Geyser Road. Open to Saratoga County area residents needing food assistance.

Lions Club and Mama Mia’s Restaurant offer “Pasta Wednesdays” packages sold between 3 and 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the front of Mama Mia’s Restaurant, 185 Ballston Avenue in Saratoga Springs.
