Vote for Biden is a way to escape current chaos
I was a supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016 and earlier this year. Democrat candidate former Vice President Joe Biden is not my second choice nor my third. But, because we have effectively only two parties in this nation, I will vote for Biden and do everything I can to support him.
Most Republicans, not just President Donald Trump, have revealed their authoritarian nature. Make no mistake: They want this to be a single-party nation. To reach that goal, they gerrymander, suppress voting and do whatever other dirty tricks they can to rule in almost every state and in the nation.
In Wisconsin, when the voters elected a Democrat governor, the Republican Legislature stripped some gubernatorial powers.
In Florida, when almost 65 percent voted to allow formerly incarcerated people to vote, the Republican Legislature and governor required they first pay any outstanding fines, effectively disenfranchising many.
The current rush to appoint a Supreme Court justice is another example.
The GOP repeatedly reveals its opposition to the popular will. This autocratic behavior poses a danger to our republic.
One may think authoritarianism can’t happen here, but it can. Certainly, there are Republicans with integrity who support democratic norms (I know some). But by supporting Trump, the Republican Party as a whole undermines democracy.
Biden may not align with all the policies I favor, but I believe we can work with him for the betterment of all our citizens.
He is our only chance to escape the chaos of another Trump administration.
