Celebrities react to election
Celebrities rolled out the red carpet for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris after the Democratic ticket finally emerged as victorious Saturday following four days of vote counting.
Manhattan-born music superstar Lady Gaga, who performed at a drivein rally for now President-elect Biden in Pittsburgh last week, shared a photo of the event Saturday, writing that Biden, Harris and the American people “just gave the world one of the greatest acts of kindness and bravery humanity has ever seen.”
Gaga, 34, also included a crying emoji and red heart, adding, “Nothing but love for our new Commander in Chief and the 1ST female VP elected to the White House. Also, way to go PA,” she wrote, referencing Pennsylvania eventually turning blue after the days-long count.
Actor, director and producer Elizabeth Banks wrote that she was crying “happy tears.”
“I’m so so so relieved,” wrote “The Hunger Games” actress. “Congrats @Joebiden I am crying at the thought of @KamalaHarris as Vice President of the United States — wow wow wow.”
Tears of joy were a common theme found on timelines across Twitter.
They were used by singer Ariana Grande (“CRYING … THANK GOD”), Comedian Jane Lynch (“I am crying liberal tears”), and actress Mandy Moore (“In tears. What a moment!”).
“Democracy won!!! USA USA USA,” wrote actress Eva Longoria, who served as one of the hosts of this year’s Democratic National Convention.
Former “Veep” star and fellow DNC host Julia Louis-dreyfus agreed.
“Democracy endures. Congratulations to our President-elect @Joebiden and our first female Vice-president-elect @Kamalaharris. Mr. President-Elect, enjoy your ice cream today. Would you like some cake to go with it?” she tweeted.
Broadway and film star Josh Gad asked if it was “too early to start drinking all day.”
“The National nightmare is over,” he wrote.
Some A-listers referenced losing candidate, President Trump, by using his famous words to make fun of his own defeat.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava Duvernay shared a GIF with a clip showing Trump uttering his now-infamous catchphrase from “The Apprentice” TV show: “You’re fired.” And it seems that the Twitter lovefest wasn’t confined only to Democrats.
Meghan Mccain, cohost of “The View” and the daughter of the late GOP hero Sen. John Mccain, congratulated “one of the truly decent and moral men I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.”
“Only a very personal note,” she followed up in another tweet, “I am relieved and look forward to having a president who respects POW’S who have been captured. (*I had to say it).”
