Cuomo should follow his words and the law, too
During a coronavirus task force briefing on Wednesday at the Capitol, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo reiterated that Thanksgiving and other upcoming holidays will trigger a surge in COVID-19 cases and that law enforcement officers who are declaring they will not enforce a 10-person limit on gatherings are violating their constitutional oath to uphold the law (“Cuomo: Police must enforce 10-person limit,” Nov. 18).
“I’m a law enforcement officer; I enforce the laws — I don’t get to pick and choose,” Cuomo said. “Well, I’m not going to enforce domestic violence laws because that’s a family affair? No: There’s a law and you have to enforce the law, or don’t call yourself a law enforcement officer.”
I was pleased to see our governor believes in an oath of office should be adhered to. It seems he picks and chooses the laws he wants to enforce, and allows mayors to and people in his administration pick and choose. Telling police they cannot cooperate with ICE officers who are following their oath to enforce immigration laws, or allowing the attorney general to tell police they should not enforce traffic laws to avoid conflict with minorities, which may lead to deadly conclusions, caused by the offender most often not following lawful orders. If anyone is picking and choosing it is him. I say, Mr. Cuomo follow your own words enforce all the laws, not just the ones you think will get you votes.
