Capital Region organizations, businesses and schools did their part to lift up the community in recent days.

Hudson Valley Community College students and staff, above, assisted the college’s foundation to assemble 100 holiday meal bags following an on-campus collection of food donations. A drive-thru distribution on campus on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1, was open to the community, while some meals were distributed through HVCC’S Educational Opportunity Center in Troy. The distribution was timed to follow other Thanksgiving food donation programs, addressing the ongoing need, especially seasonal favorites like cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Organizers of the Troy Turkey Trot said that 2,632 participants from 36 states, two Canadian provinces and the nation of Turkey participated in the event’s 73rd virtual edition, held Thursday, Nov. 26 to Saturday, Nov. 28. The largest group took part in the event’s 5K (1,791), while 569 trotted in the 10K, 170 strolled in the Turkey Mile Walk and 102 children in the eighth grade and younger grades competed in the Grade School Mile.

Palmer Avenue, Corinth resident Joseph Salisbury, a Marine Corps and Army Reserves veteran, received a new roof Dec. 2 from Pinnacle Roofing Inc., an Owens Corning Platinum Roofing contractor, as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. Through a partnership with Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, Salisbury was selected and approved as the recipient for the roof replacement. The project is a nationwide effort to show gratitude and honor the veterans and the families who support them.

Two security EMT officers at Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady were recognized with a mayoral proclamation for saving the life of a guest Nov. 14. Melinda (Mindy) Cooper-killenberger and Kyle Brownell responded to a call of a male guest who had collapsed. After they determined he had no pulse, the officers administered CPR, used an AED defibrillator and called 911. The officers resuscitated the guest and transferred him to the care of Schenectady Fire Department paramedics. Mayor Gary Mccarthy and Fire Chief Ray Senecal presented the officers with the proclamation for their lifesaving work.
