No. 1 Zags return with win

Suggs sets career high with 27 points in victory over No. 3 Hawkeyes

Sioux Falls, S.D. Jalen Suggs scored 18 of his career-high 27 points in the first half and No. 1 Gonzaga held off a late rally to beat No. 3 Iowa 99-88 on Saturday.

This was the Bulldogs’ first game since pausing activities in early December because of the coronaviru­s. Gonzaga showed little rust from not playing a game since Dec. 2.

Suggs, the West Coast Conference Freshman Player of the Week before Gonzaga’s season was paused, entered the game against Iowa averaging 13.3 points per game. He blew by that midway through the first half and finished 8-for-17 from the floor and was 7-for-10 from the 3-point line. His previous career high was 24 against Kansas on Nov. 26.

Drew Timme added 15 points and Joel Ayai added 11 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds for Gonzaga (4-0).

Luka Garza led Iowa (6-1) with 30 points and 10 rebounds on 13-for-18 shooting.

Baylor 100, Kansas State 69: Macio Teague had 23 points and 10 rebounds, Davion Mitchell scored 20 points and No. 2 Baylor beat Kansas State.

Villanova 88, St. Joseph’s 68: Jeremiah Robinson-earl scored 25 points with a broken nose, Caleb Daniels had 19 points and No. 7 Villanova beat Saint Joseph’s.

Wisconsin 85, Louisville 48: Micah Potter scored 20 points and Aleem Ford added 12 to lead No. 12 Wisconsin over No. 23 Louisville in a reschedule­d

UCF 86, Florida State 74: Brandon Mahan scored 26 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and freshman Isaiah Adams added 22 points as UCF knocked off No. 15 Florida State.

Ohio State 77, UCLA 70: Duane Washington Jr. hit two free throws in the final minute and finished with 14 points, helping No. 20 Ohio State hold off UCLA at the CBS Sports Classic.

North Carolina 75, Kentucky 63: Armando Bacot scored 11 of his teamhigh 14 points in the second half, rallying No. 22 North Carolina at the CBS Sports Classic.

Women

Stanford 80, Southern California 60: Kiana Williams scored a seasonhigh 27 points and No. 1 Stanford defeated Southern California for its sixth straight victory.

Uconn 106, Xavier 59: Christyn Williams scored 24 points to lead six Uconn players in double figures and the third-ranked Huskies ran away from Xavier.

Baylor 117, Mcneese State 24: Didi Richards made all six shots while

scoring a season-high 14 points and No. 7 Baylor rolled.

Oregon 73, Washington 49: Sydney Parrish scored 18 points and No. 7 Oregon extended the nation’s longest winning streak to 25.

Kentucky 98, Wofford 37: Dre’una Edwards scored 19 points and Rhyne Howard added 18 for No. 9 Kentucky.

UCLA 71, California 37: Michaela Onyenwere and Natalie Chou scored 18 points apiece to lead No. 11 UCLA.

Arkansas 80, Little Rock 70: Chelsea Dungee hit five 3-pointers and had 18 points to lead No. 12 Arkansas.

Maryland 101, James Madison 59: Ashley Owusu scored 19 points and

No. 14 Maryland rolled.

South Dakota State 60, Missouri State 52: Myah Selland scored 19 points with 10 rebounds and South Dakota State beat No. 20 Missouri St.

Washington State 61, Oregon State 55: Johanna Teder scored a career-high 20 points and Washington State beat No. 21 Oregon State.

Depaul 72, Georgetown 54: Dee Bekelja had 19 points, 12 rebounds and four steals and No. 24 Depaul won.
