Remember those who tried to negate election results Stefanik violates her oath by supporting Texas lawsuit

- Slingerlands

President-elect Joe Biden won the November election. Biden received 81 million-plus votes, more than 7 million more than President Donald Trump. Biden’s plurality over Trump would fill Yankee Stadium to capacity more than 150 times. Biden won 306 electoral votes, a total Trump described as a “landslide” in 2016.

Biden’s win in New York was also overwhelming. He received more than 60 percent of New Yorkers’ votes.

Still, Trump and some of his sycophants in Congress refused to accept the result.

In a desperate attempt to deny Biden the presidency, Texas’ attorney general filed suit in the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to throw out the votes of 20 million American citizens in four states. The claim had zero legal basis and zero evidentiary support. It was also despicably racist, targeting votes from heavily minority cities and counties.

Two New York congressional representatives, Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin, were among 126 congressional Republicans who threw their support behind this frivolous, seditious and racist lawsuit. Stefanik and Zeldin seemingly were willing — even eager — to betray the freely expressed will of most New Yorkers and the majority of American voters.

Why?

Clearly, these two valued their political standing with Trump and his base over their sworn duty to uphold our democracy even if that meant throwing millions of our precious votes in the garbage.

Thankfully, the Supreme Court promptly and unanimously tossed the suit. But no American, and certainly no New Yorker, should ever forget or forgive Stefanik‘s and Zeldin’s unpatriotic and selfserving betrayal.

Shame on Rep. Elise Stefanik, R- Schuylerville, who, in seeking to overturn the validly conducted elections in four states, has violated her oath of office to support the Constitution. The sorry Texas challenge that she joined sought to invalidate millions of duly cast votes. There are neither factual nor legal grounds for this antidemocratic action, just unhinged and unfounded conspiracy theories propagated by sore loser President Donald Trump and his toadies.

The Supreme Court — including the Trump appointees — correctly rejected out-of-hand the action that Stefanik supported in a filing in that court.

Our system is based on the principle that the losing side in a presidential election — and President-elect Joe Biden’s victory was not even close — accepts the verdict of the voters and moves on with the peaceful transition of power.

Stefanik apparently thinks we have some other, autocratic, system in which the loser gets to overturn the government rather than abide by the results of an election.

Stefanik disgraces not just herself but New York state as well. I am sure she would not want another state to challenge how we conduct our elections in order to change the result here nor would New York’s voters.

The House of Representatives should refuse to seat Stefanik, as is its right under law, for her attempt to overthrow our constitutional republic. It should do the same for the other 125 Republicans with whom Stefanik acted.

They have forfeited their right to serve.
