Cubs avoid arbitration with 3
Bryant, Contreras, Baez all reach deals with Chicago for ’21
Chicago The Cubs avoided arbitration with three of their biggest stars, agreeing to one-year deals with third baseman Kris Bryant, shortstop Javier Baez and catcher Willson Contreras on Friday.
Bryant, who struggled through injuries in his worst season, is set to earn $19.5 million. Baez is due $11.65 million and Contreras $6.65 million.
The Cubs also agreed to an $8.63 million deal for next season with pitcher Zach Davies, acquired in the trade that sent NL Cy Young Award runner-up Yu Darvish to San Diego.
Angels: The team avoided arbitration with right-hander Dylan Bundy, left-hander Andrew Heaney, right-hander Mike Mayers, right-hander Felix Pena and catcher Max Stassi. Two-way standout Shohei Ohtani is the team’s last remaining player still eligible for arbitration. The Angels also announced a one-year, $1.5 million agreement with catcher Kurt Suzuki, who played for
Washington last season.
Diamondbacks: Arizona agreed to one-year contracts with righthander Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly and left-hander Caleb Smith.
Mariners: Seattle agreed to terms with infielder J.P. Crawford, catcher Tom Murphy and righthander Rafael Montero.
Orioles: Baltimore agreed to a $4.75 million, one-year deal with recovering slugger Trey Mancini but haven’t come to terms yet with outfielder Anthony Santander. Mancini missed the entire 2020 season while recovering from Stage 3 colon cancer.
Padres: San Diego agreed to an $8.9 million, one-year contract with Tommy Pham. The Padres also avoided arbitration with right-handers Dinelson Lamet, Dan Altavilla and Emilio Pagan, and catcher Victor Caratini.
Rays: Tampa Bay agreed to terms on contracts for next season with four of the team’s six arbitration-eligible players, including right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow. Outfielder Manuel Margot, infielder Joey Wendle and right-hander Yonny Chirinos also reached agreements, leaving first baseman Ji-man Choi and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough as the only members of the AL champions heading to arbitration hearings.
Reds: Cincinnati reached oneyear deals with all six of its arbitration-eligible players, including pitcher and outfielder Michael Lorenzen at $4,437,500 and with right-hander Luis Castillo at $4.2 million.
Royals: Kansas City agreed to one-year contracts with righthander Brad Keller and infielder Adalberto Mondesi.
Rockies: Colorado avoided arbitration with left-hander Kyle Freeland and five other players.
Tigers: Detroit agreed to a $6.5 million contract with left-hander Matthew Boyd. The Tigers also agreed to deals with left-hander Daniel Norris, infielder Jeimer Candelario, outfielder Jacoby Jones, utilityman Niko Goodrum, right-hander Buck Farmer, righthander Joe Jimenez and righthander Jose Cisnero.
