Gostisbehe­re helps Flyers defeat Isles

Ex-union star forces turnover in OT that leads to winning goal

Scott Laughton scored in overtime and Jake Voracek and Kevin Hayes also had goals to lead the Philadelph­ia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Jordan Eberle and Scott Mayfield scored for the Islanders.

The Flyers and Islanders played for the first time since New York won Game 7 of their second-round playoff series last season. The Islanders dominated this one in regulation and outshot the Flyers 27-14.

But Shayne Gostisbehe­re, a former Union College standout, forced a turnover in OT and Laughton converted at 3:16.

Capitals 4, Bruins 3 (OT): Alex Ovechkin scored the overtime winner in his return, Vitek Vanecek made 40 saves in his sixth consecutiv­e start, and Washington beat Boston in a showdown between the top teams in the NHL’S East Division. Ovechkin beat Tuukka Rask clean off the rush 28 seconds into OT in his first game since Jan. 19. The Capitals’ captain missed the past four games because of COVID-19 protocols. Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist, Trevor van Riemsdyk scored his first since joining the Capitals and Richard Panik added one on the power play. Washington blew a three-goal lead by allowing goals to Nick Ritchie, Brad Marchand and then Charlie Mcavoy with 57.3 seconds left in regulation.

Sabres 4, Devils 3 (SO): Jack

Eichel scored in a shootout and Linus Ullmark made 31 saves for Buffalo. Victor Olofsson, Tobias Rieder and Eric Staal also scored as the Sabres improved to 3-0-1 in their past four. Taylor Hall had two assists. Janne Kuokkanen, Ty Smith and Andreas Johnsson scored for New Jersey in former Sabres coach Lindy Ruff’s first trip to Buffalo since taking over the Devils. Scott Wedgewood stopped 28 shots.

Oilers 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT):

Connor Mcdavid scored his second of the night 42 seconds into overtime.

Flames 2, Canadiens 0: Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves as Calgary handed Montreal its first regulation loss of the season.

Hurricanes 4, Stars 1: Vincent Trocheck scored twice in a threeminut­e span in the first period and Carolina defeated Dallas after Hurricanes starting goaltender Petr Mrazek left the game due to injury in the opening minutes. James Reimer replaced Mrazek and stopped 10-of-11 shots and handed the Stars their first loss of the season in their fifth game overall.

Lightning 4, Predators 3: Tyler Johnson, Cal Foote, Victor Hedman and Steven Stamkos scored in the second period for Tampa Bay.

Panthers 3, Red Wings 2 (OT): Aleksi Heponiemi won it in overtime in his NHL debut to lift Florida.

Avalanche 5, Wild 1: Brandon Saad had a goal and an assist and Philipp Grubauer made 19 saves for his Nhlbest sixth win for Colorado.

Blues 6, Ducks 1: Jordan Kyrou had two goals and an assist and Jordan Binnington had 23 saves for St. Louis.

Note: The Blackhawks canceled practice Saturday out of concern about COVID-19 as forward Ryan Carpenter and defenseman Nicolas Beaudin were added to the league’s COVID-19 list.
