Va. Tech tops Virginia

No. 20 Hokies defeat No. 8 Cavaliers behind Aluma’s career-high 29

Keve Aluma scored a careerhigh 29 points to lead No. 20 Virginia Tech to a 65-51 win over No. 8 Virginia on Saturday night.

Aluma hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor, including two 3-pointers, to help the Hokies (13-3, 7-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) rally from a 10-point deficit in the second half. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak to the rival Cavaliers.

Jay Huff paced Virginia (11-3, 7-1) with 13 points. The Cavaliers saw their seven-game winning streak and 15-game ACC winning streak halted.

Baylor 84, Auburn 72: Davion Mitchell had 13 points and seven assists against his former team, Matthew Mayer soared for a couple of highlight dunks and No. 2 Baylor stayed undefeated with a win over Auburn in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Jaylin Williams had 17 points to lead five players in double figures for Auburn.

Gonzaga 97, Pepperdine 75: Drew Timme had 19 points and was one of six Gonzaga players to score in double figures as the top-ranked Bulldogs routed Pepperdine.

Villanova 80, Seton Hall 72: Jeremiah

Robinson-earl scored 23 points in 21 minutes and No. 3 Villanova rolled to a ninth straight victory with an unexpected­ly easy decision over Seton Hall. Shevar Reynolds had 13 points for Seton Hall.

Oklahoma 66, Alabama 61: De’vion Harmon scored 18 points to help No. 24 Oklahoma defeat No. 9 Alabama in the SEC/BIG 12 Challenge, despite playing without leading scorer Austin Reaves and starting guard Alondes Williams because of COVID-19 protocols. Alex Reese scored 15 points for Alabama.

Texas Tech 76, LSU 71: Mac Mcclung, who had not made a field goal in the second half, hit two 3-pointers to key a stunning late rally as No. 10 Texas Tech beat LSU in the SEC/BIG 12 Challenge. Shannon led Texas Tech with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Florida 85, West Virginia 80: Colin Castleton scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half, and Florida beat No. 11 West Virginia in the Big 12-SEC Challenge. Derek Culver led West Virginia with a career-high 28 points.

Missouri 102, TCU 98 (OT): Xavier Pinson scored a career-best 36 points, Jeremiah Tilmon had a career-high 33 and No. 12 Missouri beat TCU in overtime in the SEC/BIG 12 Challenge. Freshman Mike Miles led TCU with a career-high 28 points.

Penn State 81, Wisconsin 71: Myreon Jones scored 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting and Penn State snapped a decade-long skid against Wisconsin by beating the No. 14 Badgers. Izaiah Brockingto­n added 18 points and John Harrar had 17 for the Nittany Lions (6-7, 3-6 Big Ten), who lost 13 straight against Wisconsin — including eight at home. Nate Reuvers led Wisconsin with

18 points.

Tennessee 80, Kansas 61: Yves Pons scored 17 points and No. 18 Tennessee never trailed in beating 15thranked Kansas in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. David Mccormack led the Jayhawks with 17 points.

Georgia Tech 76, Florida State 65: Moses Wright scored 23 points and Georgia Tech beat No. 16 Florida State, ending the Seminoles’ five-game winning streak. Florida State had 19 points from Raiquan Gray.

Creighton 69, Depaul 62: Marcus Zegarowski scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures in No. 17 Creighton’s victory.

Purdue 81, Minnesota 62: Brandon Newman scored 21 of his season-high 29 points in the second half, Trevion Williams added 17 points and 14 rebounds and Purdue overcame an early 14-point hole to beat No. 21 Minnesota.

UCLA 57, Oregon State 52: Cody Riley had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 23 UCLA outlasted pesky Oregon State. Ethan Thompson led the Beavers with 16 points.

Women

Gonzaga 79, Saint Mary’s 52: Jill Townsend scored 18 of her 20 points in the first half, Jenn Wirth had a doubledoub­le and No. 18 Gonzaga won its 14th straight game. Madeline Hollard led the Gaels with 15 points.

West Virginia 79, TCU 70: Kysre Gondrezick scored a career-high 30 points and No. 24 West Virginia defeated TCU for the Mountainee­rs’ eighth straight victory. Lauren Heard scored a career-high 34 points for TCU.
