Monmouth misses chance

Hawks fall to Niagara, failing to make up ground on Siena

Monmouth failed to capitalize on an opportunit­y to pick up a game in the MAAC standings after losing to Niagara 83-74 on Saturday.

Kobi Nwandu scored 25 points for Niagara while Jordan Cintron added 22 points and eight rebounds. Cintron was 8-for-8 from the field and 6for-7 from the foul line.

Melik Martin paced Monmouth with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Monmouth entered the day in third place in the MAAC and could have picked up a game on first-place Siena after the Saints lost to Marist earlier in the day.

Those hopes were dashed in the second half as the Purple Eagles took control of the game with a 24-9 run. Cintron ignited the surge with a dunk and Nwandu scored 10 points as Niagara’s lead grew to as large as 19 points.

St. Peter’s 68, Manhattan 54: Daryl Banks III scored 14 points and K.C. Ndefo added 13 points to help St. Peter’s coast to the win over visiting Manhattan. The Jaspers raced out to a 13-5 lead with 12 minutes, 6 seconds to go in the first half before a 25-9 run sent the Peacocks into the halftime break holding a commanding 30-22 advantage. St. Peter’s cruised through the second half to move to 9-6 overall and 6-4 in league play. Samir Stewart had 18 points to lead Manhattan.

America East men

Hartford 59, Stony Brook 57: Austin Williams made a layup with 15 seconds left to propel Hartford to the win. Juan Felix Rodriguez gave the Seawolves the lead, but Hunter Marks tied the game with a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left. Williams paced Hartford with 15 points while Marks and Traci Carter each added 13 points.

Binghamton 65, New Hampshire 44: Binghamton earned just its second win of the season with a mild upset over New Hampshire. George Tinsley scored 16 points for Binghamton. Brenton Mills sank two 3-pointers early in the second half as the Bearcats outscored the Wildcats 30-15 in the second half.

MAAC women

Rider 61, Monmouth 35: Makayla Firebaugh scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Rider won and kept Monmouth (0-7, 0-3) winless on the season. Firebaugh scored 15 points in the second half as Rider pulled away with a 23-8 run in the third quarter.

America East women

Stony Brook 67, Hartford 47: India Pagan scored 18 points to lead Stony Brook to its ninth win of the season. Pagan scored eight points in the first half to stake the Seawolves to a 10point halftime cushion and they led the rest of the game. Jada Lucas scored 10 points for Hartford.
