Plan needed now to distribute vaccine

- Edward Putnam Penn Yan

We all know the impact COVID -19 has had on our nation and state. Understandably, mistakes have been made in this journey.

Things that are coming out now are just too much to ignore: political leaders calling to use second doses of vaccine as first doses, delaying second doses, and using different manufacturers for second doses.

First, people were concerned about the rapid development of the vaccine. People were starting to gain confidence and now come these issues. Second, there has been no testing done on any of these ideas. Third, we have new variants of COVID-19 in the country. To go against manufacturer guidelines could be dangerous and possibly result in having to start the whole process over. This is not a viable option.

I know there is tremendous pressure to get everyone vaccinated, but it must be done sensibly. We have a free-for-all with everyone on their own to try to get vaccinated. People are contacting the state, their county, health care providers, drugstores, etc. People are frustrated with conflicting information. Drugstores are not equipped for massive vaccinations. People are traveling all over the state to get vaccinated. This is not a plan.

The time has passed for political finger-pointing and the blame game. Shifting responsibility to others is not a plan. We need our leaders to come up with a sensible well-thought-out plan to get this done. We, as citizens, need to understand this will take time.

If our leaders do their job and we have patience, we can prevail over COVID -19.
