Vermont ends break with win

Stef Smith scored 22 points and Ryan Davis added 21 as Vermont defeated Stony Brook 86-78 on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong break from basketball.

Vermont had not played since Jan. 17 against Maine, pausing team activities for COVID -19 concerns within the program.

Davis added 12 rebounds for his third double-double this season. Ben Shungu had 13 points for Vermont (8-3, 8-3 America East), which earned its sixth straight win spanning the pause. Justin Mazzulla and Bailey Patella added 10 points each.

Jaden Sayles had 16 points and three blocks for the Seawolves (8-11, 6-7).

More America East men

NJIT 67, Hartford 57: Zach Cooks had 24 points as NJIT beat Hartford. San Antonio Brinson had 11 points for NJIT (7-8, 6-7). D.J. Mitchell had 17 points and six rebounds for the Hawks (10-8, 7-6).

MAAC men

Canisius 89, Quinnipiac 70: Majesty Brandon came off the bench to tally 17 points to lead Canisius to a win over Quinnipiac. Jordan Henderson had 13 points and eight rebounds for Canisius (5-3, 5-3), which earned its fourth straight win. Savion Lewis had 15 points for the Bobcats (5-9, 3-7).

Fairfield 55, St. Peter’s 50: Taj Benning had 20 points as Fairfield edged past St. Peter’s. Chris Maidoh had 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Fairfield (5-13, 5-8). Matthew Lee had 11 points for the Peacocks (9-7, 6-5).

Manhattan 77, Iona 70: Elijah Buchanan had a careerhigh 26 points plus 13 rebounds as Manhattan topped Iona. Warren Williams added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Manhattan (6-9, 5-9), which broke its five-game losing streak. Isaiah Ross had 19 points for the Gaels (6-4, 4-2), whose four-game winning streak was snapped.

MAAC women

Niagara 65, Rider 59: Angel Parker scored 16 points to lead Niagara to the victory in Lawrence Township, N.J. The Purple Eagles (2-3, 2-3) had four other scorers in double digits, including Ally Haar, Maddy Yelle, Olivia Mason and Sydney Faulcon, who each had 10. Makayla Firebaugh scored 19 points to lead Rider (5-17, 4-13).

Manhattan 64, Iona 48: Manhattan extended its winning streak to four straight with a home victory over Iona. Dee Dee Davis scored 19 and Pamela Miceus added 16 to lead the Jaspers (9-6, 8-3). Ketsia Athias had 12 points for Iona (4-6, 3-4).

Quinnipiac 60, Fairfield 44: Quinnipiac raced out to a 14-6 first-quarter lead and coasted to the win. Rose Caverly scored 17 points to lead the Bobcats (11-5, 9-3). Lou Lopez-senechal also scored 17 points to lead Fairfield (7-4, 6-3).

St. Peter’s 70, Monmouth 60: St. Peter’s snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over visiting Monmouth. Kendrea Williams scored 20 points for the Peacocks (7-11, 6-6). Gabrielle Wener had 14 to lead the Hawks (1-11, 1-7).

America East women

Umass-lowell 74, New Hampshire 40: Umass Lowell built a commanding 40-21 lead by halftime on the way to the victory. Kharis Idom scored 21 points to pace the River Hawks (10-8, 9-6).

Stony Brook 59, Maine 54: Stony Brook claimed its sixth consecutiv­e victory. The win leaves the Seawolves and Black Bears tied in the loss column atop the America East.
