No. 12 Gannon women’s late run enough to edge St. Rose

Mcgettigan scores 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting for St. Rose men in 78-73 home victory

The nationally-ranked Gannon women’s team won its sixth straight game Saturday, but not without a bit of a scare as it held on for a 62-56 win over Saint Rose in Albany.

Gannon held a tenuous 56-53 lead with less than four minutes remaining, but sophomore center Sam Pirosko made three straight layups to stretch the lead to nine points and Saint Rose never recovered. Pirosko was 9-for-11 from the field and finished with 18 points and six rebounds.

Gannon (10-1) is No. 12 in the D2SIDA poll and No. 23 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associatio­n poll.

Catherine Finnerty scored a career-high 18 points for Saint Rose (0-5). Becca Townes added 17 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Saint Rose led most of the first quarter, but Gannon reeled off a 14-2 run to start the second quarter to take a 30-24 lead into halftime. Emma Wright had nine points in the first half for Gannon.

Saint Rose twice pulled within a point in the second half. Finnerty buried a 3-pointer to bring the Golden Knights within 4948 with 7:15 remaining. Nina Fedullo made a jumper with 3:36 left to pull Saint Rose within three points, but Pirosko took over from there.

On the men’s side, Josh Mcgettigan scored 14 points in the second half and Shane O’dell added 10 more after halftime as Saint Rose held on for a 78-73 win over American Internatio­nal.

Mcgettigan was 10-for-13 from the field for a game-high 24 points. O’dell finished with 15 points. O’dell was 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 50 seconds to seal the win.

Saint Rose improves to 3-3 while American Internatio­nal drops to 1-5.
