Murphy in Hockey East elite

Northeaste­rn goalie in top 5 in goals against, save percentage, saves

Sophomore Connor Murphy had a big game in goal for the 19th ranked Northeaste­rn men’s hockey team on Feb. 20. The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder recorded a shutout when the Howlin’ Huskies blanked Umass-lowell 4-0 in Lowell, Mass.

Murphy, a Hudson Falls High graduate who played with three junior teams prior to joining Northeaste­rn, had 32 saves. And he picked up his second assist of the season as well. It was his second shutout. That shutout, the first of his career, came in a 7-0 victory over New Hampshire on Jan. 13. He had a career-high 37 saves. The team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 17 Providence on Saturday and the two teams will meet Sunday at 7 in Providence.

Murphy has started all 18 games and has given up 46 goals with 482 saves. He is second in Hockey East in saves, fourth in goals against and fifth in save percentage.

Andrew Sischo (Guilderlan­d)

Saturday, Feb. 20, was a milestone day for the 6-9, 240pound redshirt senior. The Guilderlan­d High graduate scored 15 points with nine rebounds as his Daemen men’s basketball team topped Mercy 82-51 in Amherst. The effort put him past 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career. He’s the first Wildcat player, the second player in the East Coast Conference and the 15th player in NCAA Division II East Region history to reach both milestones. Sischo had 28 points and 13 rebounds in an 84-81 overtime victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday. The teams play Sunday in Sparkhill to determine the top seed in the ECC Tournament. He leads the Wildcats in scoring

(27.4) and rebounding (13.7).

Nicole Mccarvill (Clifton Park)

The 5-7 senior shortstop had a big game to help the Stony Brook softball team post a 9-4 victory over Furman in a nonleague game Saturday, Feb. 20, in Rock Hill, S.C. The Shenendeho­wa High graduate had a single, a double and a home run in five at-bats. The homer, a tworun blast, broke open the game in the top of the seventh. Mccarvill is hitting .307 with four hits in 13 at-bats in the early going for the 4-0 Seahawks. Two weekend games against Coppin State were canceled.

Stephen Rehfuss (Latham)

The fifth-year senior had two goals and an assist, but No. 4 Syracuse dropped an 18-11 decision to No. 12 Army on Feb. 20 in Syracuse. The Shaker High graduate had three shots on goal. He was an Inside Lacrosse All-american honorable mention last spring and has 54 goals and 81 assists for 135 points in his career. Redshirt junior midfielder Lucas Quinn of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High) also saw action for the Orange against the Black Knights.

Chloe Jones (Slingerlan­ds)

The 5-6 senior midfielder kicked off the season by scoring two goals to help 16th-ranked Virginia lacrosse post a 21-6 nonleague victory over East Carolina on Feb. 15 in Charlottes­ville, Va. She took three shots with two on goal. Jones, a graduate of New Jersey’s Lawrencevi­lle School, saw action but didn’t score as the Cavaliers turned back Richmond 15-9 on Feb. 19 and Virginia Commonweal­th 12-10 on Saturday. She entered the season with 15 goals and an assist during her first three seasons with the team.

Olivia Lomascolo (Ballston Lake)

The junior finished second to help the Siena women’s cross country team finish third out of five teams at the Jasper XC Invite on Feb. 20 in Montgomery. The Shenendeho­wa High graduate covered the 5,000meter course in 18 minutes, 24.3 seconds. Sophomore Elaine Atanasova of Delanson (Duanesburg Central) finished sixth (18:53.5) and senior Regina Rosati of South Glens Falls (South Glens Falls High) was 10th (19:02.2). Sophomore Brandan Odem of Chestertow­n finished first in the men’s race to help the Saints finish third. His 8,000-meter time was 25:37.8. Senior Aiden Canavan of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High) was sixth (26:23.8).

Kaitlyn Watrobski (Clifton Park)

The 5-6 freshman guard is averaging 20.7 minutes a game coming off the bench for the 5-7 St. Thomas Aquinas women’s basketball team. The Shenendeho­wa High graduate is averaging 6.0 points a game with 19 rebounds, eight assists and six steals. She has connected on 20 of 62 3-point baskets (32.3 percent). Watrobski had a college career-high 12 points in a 68-64 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on

Feb. 13 and had a team-high 10 points as the Spartans got by Molloy 45-37 on Feb. 20 in Rockville Center.
