Price Chopper/tops merger reminder of region's value
The news regarding the upcoming merger between Schenectady-based Price Chopper/market 32 and Buffalo-based Tops Markets is one more reminder of how lucky we are to live in the Capital Region.
We are beyond fortunate to have a locally owned and operated company as committed to our region as is Price Chopper/market 32. Beyond the legendary personal commitment of the Golub family to our local cultural, civic and educational institutions, the company itself has long been a “go-to” source for everything from financial support during a natural disaster, to donations of cups and napkins for a Little League fundraiser, to sponsorship of iconic community events such as the region’s
July 4th celebration and Thanksgiving dinner, and everything in between.
Importantly, this merger will not change the company’s significant commitment to the communities it serves and the new parent company being formed to oversee the two grocers will be headquartered in Schenectady.
Many of us can recall other significant local businesses that went through mergers and eventually left, taking with them their local engagement and the talented people who played a role in the vibrancy of our communities and organizations. Price Chopper/market 32 is not doing that, and it is reasonable to assume that it will be attracting more people to our area who will add to our intellectual and community capital.
It is always good to see Capital Region businesses doing both well and good in our community. I congratulate Price Chopper/market 32 on the merger and express our gratitude for this industry leader’s continued presence in the region.
