Ballston Spa grad Luke Gold among top hitters for Boston College baseball.
It took a while for Luke Gold to get going with the Boston College baseball team, but the sophomore is one of the top offensive players on the Eagles this season.
The 6foot, 220pound second baseman from Ballston and a Ballston Spa High graduate, has started all 29 games and is second in the team in hitting with a .333 average. He has 39 hits in 117 at-bats with 12 doubles, a triple, a team-high eight home runs and a team-high 33 runs batted in. He has scored 22 runs and is 2-for-2 in stolen bases.
Gold played in 15 just games as a freshman and batted .246.
Boston College is 14-15 overall and 4-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Nick Grabek (Schenectady)
The 5-11, 170-pound right-hander made his first start of the season for the unbeaten Fairfield baseball team and the Guilderland High graduate picked up the win in a 6-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Quinnipiac last Wednesday in Fairfield, Conn. He worked
4 2⁄3 innings and gave up five hits and one run, which was earned. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three. Grabek pitched in relief prior to that for the 10-0 Stags and picked up a pair of saves.
Allie Lajeunesse (Latham)
The senior right-hander is a key performer for the Catholic softball team. The Cardinals are 8-0 after beating Juniata 1-0 and 4-1 last Monday. The Shaker High graduate earned a seven-inning completegame victory in the second game. She gave up four hits and a run, which was unearned. She didn’t walk a batter and fanned four. Lajeunesse is 3-0 on the season with an 0.89 earned-run average. In 15 2⁄3 innings, she has given up 13 hits and three runs, two earned, with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Madison Burns (East Greenbush)
The junior right-hander is the workhorse on the mound for the Hofstra softball team, the Pride 11-7 after splitting a doubleheader at Stony Brook on Tuesday. The Columbia High graduate pitched a complete-game 4-1 victory in the first game and came out of the bullpen to work the final two innings and was credited with the loss in a 4-3 eight-inning game. On the season, Burns is 5-6 with a save and has a 2.97 ERA. In 63 2⁄3 innings, she has given up 62 hits and 32 runs, 27 earned.
Danny Watson (Nassau)
The sophomore righthander made his first start of the season in a bullpen game for the Virginia Commonwealth baseball team in a 13-4 victory over Georgetown last Wednesday. The 6-7, 235-pound Columbia High graduate worked three innings and gave up two hits and no runs and struck out five. Watson pitched in 10 games in relief before the start. He has a 1-3 record with a save. In 24 1⁄3 innings, he has given up 24 hits and 15 runs, 13 earned, with 13 walks and a teamhigh 33 strikeouts.
Sal Pezzolla (East Greenbush)
The senior is hitting .283 for the St. Anselm baseball team, the Hawks 6-7 after topping Franklin Pierce
9-4 on Wednesday. It was the team’s first Northeast-10 Conference victory after five losses. The La Salle Institute graduate has 13 hits in 46 at-bats with four doubles, a home run, nine runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Senior Patrick Henning of Guilderland (Guilderland High) has played in three games and is hitting. .333.
Caitlin Bolen (Queensbury)
The senior and her twin sister Devon, both Queensbury High graduates, are key performers on the Bryant women’s lacrosse team, the Bulldogs 2-4 after a tough 12-11 loss to Sacred Heart last Wednesday in Smithfield, R.I. Caitlin had three goals and Devon two in the game. Caitlin has scored 14 goals while Devon has chipped in with eight. She also has nine draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
