Need to get away? Here are some safe-travel tips

-

many have announced their returnfor late 2021 and are eager to disembark safely, some requiring proof of vaccination in order to travel.

“The cruise lines have not seen a passenger onboard in over a year,” Tobin said. “All those guests that were scheduled to sail had an option to take future cruise credits so all those guests are rebooking.”

To lure sea lovers, cruise lines are offering air-inclusive packages and complimentary upgrades, including adult beverages, free gratuity and Wi-fi included in pricing.

“If the ships are empty, you get a better price,” Tobin said.

“If the ships are full, you pay more. So book your trip now and secure your rate.” Tobin said that travel agencies like Yankee Trails have captured group space well in advance in anticipation of this scenario.

Air travel demand is also soaring. More than a million travelers passed through security checkpoints each day over the last two weeks, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Many carriers are also adding new flight routes. Southwest just announced service to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and United Airlines plans to expand service around Memorial Day weekend.

"People are more confident about flying," Jones said. "More Americans are being vaccinated every single day and the CDC recently confirmed this not only prevents symptoms but also infection."

The CDC also reports COVID -19 does not spread easily

on airplanes due to the way air is circulated, further easing flying fears.

In the midst of the pandemic, as most Americans were hunkered down, some carriers offered one-way tickets for peanuts, with prices starting at $20. They were desperate to fill seats on empty planes. Those days are likely over.

“Unfortunately, many of those historic low airfare prices are gone,” Jones said. “The good news is it is still possible to get a good deal.”

Patience and research are key to finding cheap plane tickets. Be flexible with your dates, airline and airport. Use Google Flights to track multiple dates and airlines to find a price you are comfortable paying, Jones said.

“Aim to book four months to a month before your departure for the best deal,” he said. “

Even if you live near a major international airport, you should check prices for nearby regional airports.”

If you’re feeling anxious about travel, keep in mind some carriers, hotels and resorts are still offering flexible cancellation options. American Airlines is waiving change fees for all domestic, short-haul international and select long-haul international flights on select fares. Iberostar Hotels & Resorts, a global chain featuring more than 120 properties in 18 countries, is allowing those who travel to resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic to cancel free of charge up to 24 hours prior to arrival.

If vaccines and enhanced cleaning protocols aren't enough to get you to pack a bag, but you're still desperate for an escape, there are options.

“For those that want to enjoy travel but avoid the congestion of some popular areas, we recommend a road trip,” says

Jones. If you travel by car you can skirt crowded airports and other transportation hubs.

“Hit the open road and visit national parks and scenic drives during down times,” Jones recommends. “Vacationers will get to see the best of what the country has to offer and still be very safe.”
