Braves’ Acuna tears ACL

Needs season-ending surgery after crashing into OF fence in victory

-

Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. will undergo season-ending surgery after suffering a complete tear of the ACL in his right knee during Atlanta’s 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Acuna landed awkwardly on his right leg after jumping on the warning track in right field to try to catch a drive from Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fifth. He slammed into the outfield wall and crumbled on the warning track, immediately grabbing toward his right knee while Chisholm sprinted out an inside-the-park homer.

Rays 5, Blue Jays 2: Brandon Lowe homered twice and Mike Zunino also connected, helping Tampa Bay beat Toronto for its sixth consecutive win. Ryan Yarbrough (6-3) pitched five innings of two-run ball, improving to 5-0 in his past 12 appearances.

Twins 9, Tigers 4: Jorge Polanco hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh and Minnesota rallied from a fourrun deficit. Alex Kirilloff also homered for Minnesota. Luis Arraez drove in two runs with an eighth-inning single.

White Sox 8, Orioles 3: Brian Goodwin matched a career high with four hits, including a solo homer, and drove in three as Chicago won its fourth straight. Chicago has won nine of its past 12 and has taken seven in a row from the Orioles dating to 2019, its longest streak against Baltimore since winning eight straight in 1989-90.

Reds 4, Brewers 3: Eugenio Suarez hit a leadoff home run in the ninth inning against All-star closer Josh Hader and Cincinnati beat Milwaukee in a game that included three ejections.

Cardinals 6, Cubs 0: Paul Goldschmidt, Paul Dejong and Tommy Edman all homered in the fifth for St. Louis

Athletics 8, Rangers 4 (11): Jed Lowrie hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 11th inning after an earlier home run and Oakland went on to beat Texas. Lowrie hit a sharp single to right with one out in the 11th off Spencer Patton (0-1), who then threw a wild pitch that allowed another run before Stephen Piscotty added a two-run homer.

Giants 10, Nationals 4: All-star Brandon Crawford had three hits, including a homer, for the Giants.

Indians 14, Royals 6: Cesar Hernandez and Oscar Mercado each hit a three-run homer to lift Cleveland.

Note: Former Yankee Joe Pepitone filed a lawsuit against the Baseball Hall of Fame seeking the return of the Louisville Slugger bat that Mickey Mantle used to hit his 500th career home run more than five decades ago. Pepitone also is seeking compensatory damages of at least $1 million. The bat is currently valued at more than $500,000, according to the lawsuit. The suit claims that Pepitone agreed to lend the bat to the Hall of Fame “with the understanding and upon the condition that it would be returned to him at any time upon his request.” Pepitone claims he’s visited the Hall many times since and was always reassured that the bat would be returned whenever he wanted it. The Hall says the bat was donated and that it has owned it for more than 50 years.
