Flames spoil opening of Isles’ new arena

Mangiapane scores twice for Calgary; short-handed N.Y. drops its fifth straight game

Andrew Mangiapane scored two power-play goals to help the Calgary Flames spoil the Islanders’ debut of their new home arena next to Belmont Park, beating New York 5-2 on Saturday night.

Brad Richardson, Trevor Lewis and Johnny Gaudreau also scored, and Noah Hanafin had two assists to help Calgary extend its point streak to five games (3-0-2). Jacob Markstrom stopped 34 shots.

Brock Nelson scored twice for the short-handed Islanders, who were missing seven players and lost their fifth straight. It marked New York’s longest losing streak in regulation in four seasons under coach Barry Trotz.

Semyon Varlamov had 26 saves to fall to 0-3-0 with a 3.31 goals-against average this season.

Devils 5, Lightning 3: Mackenzie Blackwood stopped a penalty shot in the third period for one of his 31 saves, Yegor Sharangovi­ch scored twice in New Jersey’s four-goal third period, and the Devils beat Tampa Bay. Bruins 5, Flyers 2: Derek Forbort had two goals to lead Boston to its third straight victory. Penguins 2, Maple Leafs 0: Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for his second straight shutout, and Pittsburgh beat Toronto to snap the Maple Leafs’ five-game winning streak. Jake Guentzel and Jeff Carter scored for Pittsburgh.

Canadiens 6, Predators 3: Montreal broke out for a four-goal second period and held on for a win over Nashville despite a third-period hat trick from Matt Duchene.

Stars 4, Blues 1: Roope Hintz scored two almost identical short-handed goals, the first for Dallas this season, and Dallas defeated St. Louis.

Coyotes 2, Red Wings 1 (OT): Clayton Keller scored just seconds into overtime to give Arizona a win over Detroit.

Note: Saturday’s Ottawa Senators game against the New York Rangers was postponed because of a COVID-19 outbreak on the Senators’ team. As of Monday, Ottawa had 10 players and an assistant coach in the COVID-19 protocol. The Senators are scheduled to return to action Monday night at Colorado.
