Report: Giants looking to trade receiver Toney
Team unhappy over several issues with its first-round pick from the 2021 draft
Soon, K.T. will be O.U.T.
The Giants are looking to trade wide receiver Kadarius Toney, sources tell the New York Daily News, making calls to see what they can get for their 2021 firstround pick.
There was some internal momentum for bailing on Toney during his tumultuous rookie season a year ago. His commitment came into question behind the scenes during his rookie year due to lack of playbook study, poor meeting behavior and frequent injuries.
The high-maintenance wideout hasn’t shown up to any of the team’s offseason programs yet under first-year coach Brian Daboll, either. So the Giants are trying to move last year’s No. 20 overall pick.
Toney missed ample practice and game time from May through December due to a laundry list of injuries: two positive tests for COVID -19, a hamstring, ankle, thumb, quad, oblique and shoulder.
He got thrown out of a loss to the Cowboys for throwing a punch. And he had a toe or foot issue in OTAs when he wore the wrong-sized cleats and practiced at one point with one shoe on.
Jaguars: Jacksonville general manager Trent Baalke turned toward coach Doug Pederson, smiled widely and said, “I’m pretty confident this will be the last time that I’ll be making the first pick.” History indicates he’s right. No team or general manager in the NFL’s modern era (since 1970) has drafted No. 1 in three straight years. Tampa Bay would have done it as a fledgling expansion franchise in 1976-78, but the Buccaneers traded the top pick in 1978 to Houston. The Oilers then selected Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell. Jacksonville will be the fourth franchise — two of the others have accomplished the dubious feat twice — with the first pick in back-to-back years when the Jaguars open the NFL draft Thursday night in Las Vegas. Jacksonville, which chose Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence last year and is expected to add Michigan pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson, Georgia’s Travon Walker or an offensive tackle next, is looking to become the first to say it nailed both selections.
Draft: A dearth of premier passers in the upcoming NFL draft meant the quarterback carousel spun faster than ever this spring. Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota, Carson Wentz, Teddy Bridgewater, Drew Lock and Deshaun Watson all changed teams in 2022. Franchises still searching for a prized quarterback won’t find much star power in this year’s crop of college QBs, although there are potential upgrades in the likes of Liberty’s Malik Willis, Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, Mississippi’s Matt Corral, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder and North Carolina’s Sam Howell.
