Fountas sparks D.C. to win over New England

Greek internatio­nal scores two goals and adds an assist in first half vs. Revolution

Taxiarchis Fountas scored two goals and added an assist — all in the first half — to spark D.C. United to a 3-2 victory over the New England Revolution in MLS action on Saturday.

Defender Brandon Bye staked the Revolution (2-5-1) to a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute, but Fountas found the net 14 minutes later to knot the score at 1.

Fountas sent a crossing pass to Michael Estrada who scored on a header to give DC United (3-4-0) a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute. Fountas, a Greek internatio­nal who hadn’t found the net in United’s first six matches, scored to push the lead to 3-1 just three minutes later.

New England’s Adam Buksa capped the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute.

Montreal 1, Philadelph­ia 1: Kei Kamara scored in the 59th minute to help CF Montreal earn a tie with the Philadelph­ia Union. Kamara scored the equalizer for Montreal (3-3-2) off a crossing pass from Romell Quioto. The Union (5-1-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute on a penalty-kick score by Julian Carranza. Kamal Miller took down Carranza inside the box and Carranza scored from the spot.

Minnesota 3, Chicago 0: Emanuel Reynoso broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 72nd minute and Dayne St. Clair saved all four shots he faced to propel Minnesota United to a victory over the Chicago Fire. Bongokuhle Hlongwane had an assist on Reynoso’s game-winner for Minnesota. Kervin Arriaga and Robin Lod added goals in the final six minutes after Chicago’s Federico Navarro was sent off for preventing Lod from getting through on goal.

Dallas 2, Houston 1: Facundo Quignon scored a goal in the third minute of second-half stoppage time to send FC Dallas to a victory over the Houston Dynamo. Sebastian Ferreira notched his third goal of the season to give the Dynamo (3-2-3) a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Dallas (4-1-3) didn’t score the equalizer until Tsiki Ntsabeleng found the net in the 87th minute.

Austin 3, Vancouver 0: Maximilian­o Urruti scored two first-half goals, Sebastian Driussi added his league-leading sixth after halftime and Austin FC cruised to a victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
