Finland tops U.S., plays Canada for hockey title

TAMPERE, Finland — Defenseman Miro Heiskanen had a goal and two assists and Finland beat the U.S. 4-3 on Saturday to set up its third straight world hockey championsh­ip final against Canada.

Dylan Cozens scored twice in Canada’s 6-1 victory over the Czech Republic.

Nate Schmidt, Sean Farrell and Adam Gaudette scored for the U.S.

In Canada’s victory, Kent Johnson, Adam Lowry, Matt Barzal and Cole Sillinger also scored.

Track: Olympic gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica held off American Sha’Carri Richardson in the 100 meters at a rainy Prefontain­e Classic. Thompson-Herah defended her Pre title in 10.79 seconds, in front of Richardson in 10.92. American Michael Norman won the 400 in a meetrecord 43.60. Trayvon Bromell won the men’s 100 in 9.93 seconds ahead of Fred Kerley and defending world champ Christian Coleman. Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the 200 in 22.41. In the Bowerman Mile, the Pre’s signature event, Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigts­en won in 3:49.76. Samuel Tanner won the 1,500 in 3:34.37, and Brazilian Alison Dos Santos won the men’s 400 hurdles in 47.23, the leading time in the world this season. Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi won the 5,000 in a meet record 12:50.05, breaking Mo Farah’s record by 16 seconds. Two-time Olympic

gold medalist Ryan Crouser won the shot put with a mark of 75-61⁄4. England’s Keely Hodgkinson won the 800 in 1:57.72 and Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon beat her own meet record in the 1,500 in 3:52.59. Fellow Kenyan Norah Jeruto won the steeplecha­se in 8:57.97.

Cycling: Jai Hindley overtook race favorite Richard Carapaz to storm into the overall lead of the Giro d’Italia with a day left, and Alessandro Covi won the stage for his first grand tour victory. Hindley has a 1:25 lead.

Winter: Johan Eliasch has been re-elected to lead skiing and snowboardi­ng through 2026.
