Rockies and Nats split doubleheader
Iglesias’ three hits, Kuhl’s pitching lift Colorado to victory
Jose Iglesias had three hits and drove in the goahead run in the seventh, Chad Kuhl pitched 6 ⅓ innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 to split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Victor Robles homered, singled twice and drove in a career-high six runs as Washington beat Colorado 13-7 in the first game.
With two on and two out in the seventh, Iglesias lined a single to left against Kyle Finnegan (1-1) that scored C.J. Cron to make it 3-2. Cron, who started the two-out rally with a walk, moved to second when Brendan Rodgers singled to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Colorado’s Charlie Blackmon went 5-for-10 in the doubleheader.
Royals 7, Twins 3: Rookie Bobby Witt Jr. delivered three more doubles for his second straight three-hit game and Kansas City beat Minnesota. Marlins 4, Braves 1: Seeing Sandy Alcantara for the second time in a week was of no benefit to the Atlanta hitters. The hardthrowing Miami right-hander was more overpowering than ever. Alcantara matched his career high with 14 strikeouts, again dominating the Braves and leading the Marlins to a victory.
Cardinals 8, Brewers 3: Nolan Gorman hit his first major league homer and Matthew Liberatore earned his first major league win, helping St. Louis beat Milwaukee. Liberatore (1-0), the organization’s minor league Player of the Year for last season, pitched around a couple of Gorman errors in five scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked three.
Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 2: Mookie Betts started the game with a leadoff homer, Justin Turner added four hits and Los Angeles beat Arizona. Betts hit his 32nd career leadoff home run, ripping a fastball from Merrill Kelly over the right-field fence for his sixth long ball over the past eight games.
Reds 3, Giants 2: Right fielder Aristides Aquino threw out pinch-runner Joey Bart at the plate to end the game, and Cincinnati held off San Francisco behind Kyle Farmer’s early three-run homer. Cincinnati extended its winning streak to a season-high four.
Cubs 5, White Sox 1: Keegan Thompson outpitched Johnny Cueto over five sharp innings in a spot start, Frank Schwindel drove in two runs and the Chicago Cubs beat the crosstown White Sox. Thompson (5-0) matched his longest outing of the season, allowing one run and five hits at Guaranteed Rate Field. The right-hander struck out four and walked one in his third start and 11th appearance.
Rangers 11, Athletics 4: Marcus Semien hit a grand slam for his first home run after signing with Texas in the offseason, Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia added back-toback shots and the Rangers routed Oakland.
Guardians 8, Tigers 1: Jose Ramirez homered and drove in five runs, leading Shane Bieber and Cleveland past Detroit.
Notes: Cincinnati outfielder Tommy Pham was suspended by Major League Baseball for three games on Saturday after he slapped San Francisco Giants outfielder Joc Pederson because of a dispute about their fantasy football league. Pham, 34, also was fined. The suspension was made retroactive to Friday night, and he will serve the final two games this weekend . ... The Chicago White Sox designated left-hander Dallas Keuchel for assignment on Saturday. Keuchel is 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA in eight starts this year. He signed a $55.5 million, three-year contract with the White Sox in December 2019 . ... Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon was placed on the 10-day injured list due to right wrist inflammation.
