Duffy scores seven goals to tie lacrosse season record
Queensbury rallied from five goals down in the first half to beat John Jay-Cross River 18-13 in the Class B girls’ lacrosse state quarterfinal on Saturday in Montrose.
Brigid Duffy scored seven goals to tie Maddie Montgomery’s schoolrecord with her 87th goal of the season. Delaney Donahue added five goals for the Spartans (16-0).
Queensbury trailed 11-6 late in the first half, but scored four goals in 1 minute and 14 seconds to pull within 11-10 at the half.
Duffy scooped up a rebound and beat Wolves keeper Aidan Summer to give Queensbury a 15-12 lead with 15:22 remaining.
Shannon Nolan led the Wolves with three goals and five assists.
More girls’ lacrosse: Seventh grader Maggie Lescault buried an 8-meter free shot with five seconds left to give Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake an 8-7 win over Section I’s Tappan Zee in a Class C state quarterfinal. The Spartans trailed 6-2 with 15 minutes left in the game, but scored three straight goals to get back in it. MK Lescault tied the game at 7 with 5:01 left. Ella Blesi led Burnt Hills with four goals and Lescault added three . ... Emma Muchnick scored late in the first half and early in the second half to propel Suffern to a 12-9 win over Shenendehowa in a Class A state quarterfinal . ... Bronxville jumped out to an 11-0 halftime advantage and cruised past Schuylerville 18-1 in a Class D state quarterfinal. The Section I champs advance to take on the winner of Sunday’s game between Section VIII’s Cold Spring Harbor and Section XI’s Center Moriches in the semifinal round next weekend.
Softball: Saratoga Springs dropped a 10-4 decision to Liverpool in the Class AA state quarterfinal round. The Section III champion built a commanding 10-0 lead before the Blue Streaks finally broke through with a run on an RBI groundout from Bella Labate in the sixth . ... Olivia DeCitise tossed a complete game and was 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Troy past Section III’s New Hartford 9-3 in a Class A state quarterfinal. DeCitise slammed a homer, added a double and finished with three RBIs to lead the Flying Horses to the semifinals . ... Ichabod Crane advanced to the Class B semifinal round with a 13-1 victory over Section I’s Canton in its state quarterfinal contest. The Riders, who won their most recent state championship in 2018, play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Moriches Athletic Complex in the Class B final four round . ... Greenwich punched its ticket to the Class C semifinals with a 14-0 win over Norwood-Norfolk of Section X in its state quarterfinal game. Lily McCauliffe tossed five innings of no-hit ball and struck out six to earn the win for Greenwich. The Witches jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the end of the second, keyed by Morgan Randall’s two-run double, and coasted to victory . ... Argyle rallied to top nearby Bolton/ Schroon Lake 7-6 in a Class D state quarterfinal clash. Kylie Humiston’s RBI single snapped a 6-6 deadlock and gave the Scots a spot in next weekend’s semifinals. Argyle trailed 4-3 in the fourth before Paige Cormie’s two-run single put the Scots in front. Argyle added another run to make it 6-4 but Bolton/Schroon Lake scored twice in the bottom half of the fourth to even things at 6.
Baseball: James Mason and Eitan Spinoza homered to lead Fayetteville-Manlius to a 10-2 win over Saratoga in the Class AA state quarterfinals. Saratoga scored both of its runs in the fourth. Nate Rodriguez led off with a double and scored on Zander Teator’s single. Teator later scored on a wild throw to pull within 4-2, but the rally was short-lived as Mason hit a solo shot and Spinoza hit a two-run home run in the fifth . ... Averill Park scored seven first-inning runs and never looked back in a 13-0 fiveinning win over Massena of Section X in a Class A state quarterfinal. The Warriors added five runs in the second and another in the third . ... Schuylerville rolled past Section VII’s Peru 7-3 in a Class B state quarterfinal. The Black Horses scored four runs in the first . ... Chatham shut out Norwood-Norfolk of Section X 6-0 to move on to the Class C semifinal round. The Panthers held a slim 2-0 lead but added three runs in the fifth to put away the game . ... Chapel Field Christian shut down Germantown 2-0 to close the Clippers’ season in a Class D state quarterfinal. The Section IX champion scored single runs in the second and third innings.
Boys’ lacrosse: Jackson Ricciardi scored four goals and Elliot Jones and Brandon Rispoli added three apiece as Briarcliff beat Schuylerville 14-2 in a Class D state quarterfinal. Nate King and Hansen Peck scored for the Black Horses (14-5). The fourth-ranked Bears (17-4) scored six straight goals in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead at halftime.
